Dealing with the UK Home Office - whinging.

This is whinge. Be warned.

Two months ago filled in an online form on gov.uk to get a duplicate UK naturalisation certificate for my wife, so we can continue with Swiss naturalisation.

Looking for way to contact the the UK home office to find out if it's still progressing. Online enquiry form - doesn't even have Switzerland on the "where you are list". The nearest is Zürich. A phone number gives 3 options. None of which are valid...

Oh well. Permits to be renewed again, I guess.

Re: Dealing with the UK Home Office - whinging.

Similar problem with UK Tax Office - return from two years ago got stuck in the process, so they fined us £100 even though their own system showed it was sent to them.

Now the system doesn't even show that, apparently it can only cope with one year at a time. But we have screenshots

We paid the £100 and since then every communication with them regarding the previous and this year's tax return has had a formal complaint and demand for a refund attached.

Zero response to any of the complaints or even the new tax return.

Some years ago registered with HMRC online system but now I cannot log in as they use an online credit agency to check your UK address which, of course, I do not have.
Now from time to time they inform me there is news for me in their online system which I cannot access so I have to write and ask for a letter.

When we first got here, I was in one apartment, and gave HMRC that address. Then moved to another place, and informed them of the new address. I got a demand for tax (that I did owe) about 8 months later, plus interest. It had been forwarded from my first address. Leaving aside the screw up by Swiss Post, who didn't operate my paid for redirect properly, when I called HMRC they said that - oh yes, I can see, someone changed your address back to the old one.

So I don't have to pay interest?

Don't be daft. Of course I did. But £40 to never hear from them again was worth it.

I've found that calling them directly by phone is much better. When you speak to a real person they are very helpful.

I have had no trouble filing UK tax returns from my Swiss domicile (registered there as a Swiss citizen, but stuck in the UK with family because of COVID-19 for two years), taxable by reason of days spent in the UK but not on my foreign government service pension (tax treaty exclusion). (I am not British and was eligible for "settlement" using my Swiss address.) At the moment there is double tax on my various state pensions from different countries (including UK and Switzerland) but the tax hasn't been significant enough to appeal. That may change: DWP recently discovered I was eligible for bereavement pension based on my late (British) wife's record and sent many thousands of pounds to my bank account, followed by a letter to my Swiss address. All unsolicited. And now my UK State Pension has tripled.

However, my daughter has left the UK for the USA and though she is a British citizen she can't file online because she needs to file SA109 which has to be filed on paper. Her only UK income this year will be her share of rent on a flat. As she is British she ought to get the £12,570 personal allowance and so a total refund of withheld tax on the rent. Which the IRS will then proceed to take away. Swiss citizens only get the personal allowance if they live in the UK or Switzerland.)

The Government Gateway is buggy. You may have to re-register and get sent a new access code in the post.

Or you might use commercial software which gets around HMRC online restrictions according to this comment: https://community.hmrc.gov.uk/forums...9-00155d9c6b78

They are both UK Government departments - I think the incompetence and desire to hide from contact from their customers is a fairly generic trait in that group.

Of course there is a ranking of incompetence, which DVLA seems to win hands down having lapped all the others several times. Border Force seems to be giving them a close run though, with their "90% less people, 900% more queues" effort.

Therein lies the rub. Finding a number that isn't automated and has no options that match. Oh and one that is 0300 and inaccessible from outside the UK. The only phone numbers I found +44 are all to do with visa applications.

I found an online form. It didn't quite match, but managed to ask my query for £3.

Now waiting for email response.

Will the naturalisation folks in BL not accept a notarised copy of the UK naturalisation cert? You might also try the 3million group on FB to see if they have suggested routes to contact the HO.

I had the same, just change your registration to Gov. Gateway and all of the old data is then tied to that.
