| | Re: The Apple Thread | Quote: | | | | | From the Apple US site, the MacBook Pro gets a little performance upgrade (faster processor, more RAM, bigger HD), but nothing else that I am aware of:
$1199
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
250GB 5400-rpm hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor
The 15" and 17" don't seem to have anything earth shattering, either. Am I missing something? I would certainly be happy to have waited a few weeks for the upgrades, but thought there might be more.
fduvall | | | | | You're missing the fact that the 15" and 17" models now have new core processors. The i5 and i7 processors also offer "turbo boost", whereby if only a single core is being used the clock speed can be increased. They're amazingly fast processors and a huge upgrade from the old ones. The 15" models also have the option for a higher resolution display. Nice!
Of course, you wont be able to use them in summer because they'll run so hot...

Thanks, Fraser. I saw that on the other thread after I posted. They look pretty good, after all. But between my MacBook Pro 13" and my MacPro, I am good. Now my Wife, with her 3yr old MBPro 15" is being REAL nice to me these days!!!

IMO, anything less than 10% and you're exaggerating.

Apple is claiming 1.5x improvement for Final Cut. 1.1x for Aperture.

Have a look here: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/performance.html
Could be a pretty significant performance boost.

An interesting insight into Apple's decision to leave the 13" Macbook Pro with Core 2 Duo here: http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/19/...h-macbook-pro/ |

Sometimes I wonder how much of these 'leaks' that Apple manages...I can't imagine that there are too many prototypes in circulation and to bring one into a local bar and lose it?
Seems a bit implausible. But it sure creates some great PR.

I reckon Gizmodo have just had their trousers yanked down & been bent over the nearest table by Apple |

Does the Apple store in Geneva usually have good stock of MBPs?

fduvall | | | | | I always wonder how someone that far down the food chain could be allowed to take a prototype out off campus like this guy allegedly did?
For all of that, if this is the real thing... I am in.
Brian.

Here's a nice little freebie for anyone still looking for mac-based dvd ripping software. As a disclaimer, i've not had a chance to try it yet but thought I'd better let you all know before the offer expires... http://www.winxdvd.com/giveaway/ |

I'm only mentioning it at all because it's currently free, so it wont harm if you download it and then never use it |

A quick heads up to all Apple (and Linux) users. There's a new worm about - Koobface. The worm itself is not new, but the fact that it's been ported to Mac and Linux is. Currently the threat is rated as low, but it's possible that the authors may improve the effectiveness of this nasty in the near future. It's attack vector is through social networking sites - Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc.

| | The Apple Thread
Dear Marjorie
My Friend has recently discovered iMovie.
My Friend wants to be able to grab snippits of video from retail DVDs to include in homemade movies.
I have warned My Friend that that might sometimes be copyright infringement, but all My Friend muttered was something about "Mac the Kipper".
I'm worried that My Friend might get into trouble, so could someone please tell me exactly what steps My Friend shouldn't do, so that I can make exactly sure that My Friend stays on the straight on narrow?
Many thanks in advance from My Friend and Me too, of course |

Surely you'll be ok just sharing your movies among friends.
If you upload them to Youtube, they are somehow scanned but I don't know how effectively, but all that will happen is that the video will be taken down if someone raises an objection.
Of course, if you're just including huge chunks of films in your videos, or sharing for profit, it would probably be taken more seriously.
Not really sure on the technicalities of fair use in Swiss copyright law, but would be interested to find out if anyone knows.

Just had a quick play with the 10.7 beta (Lion), and quite honestly there was very little to get excited about. To be truthful it looks and feels just like 10.6, or 10.5 for the most part. From my quick glance at it, the most pointless addition has to be launch pad - click on launchpad and all your apps are displayed a la iPad. Seriously most if not all apps that you use are already going to be on the dock anyway.
Spaces has changed in it's operation, but I'll need to look closer at it. You can also enable full disk encryption which is either going to be a good thing or a very bad thing indeed if you don't keep regular backups.
At the moment I've got it as clean install onto a fresh disk. The fun will come at the weekend when I'll install it onto my test laptop to work out what's broken and what isn't.
Even though it is a beta I don't see much, if anything, changing in terms of features, so it would appear that anybody who is expecting a major upgrade from 10.6 is going to be somewhat disappointed.
Oh and one more thing, you know that program you've had since the dawn of time, which you've never updated because it's just always worked with every new system? Well, here's where it stops working, because Apple have dumped Rosetta (the system by which you can run PowerPC code on an intel mac) and therefore any backward compatibility with pre Intel code. I see many drivers for older, yet perfectly good, printers falling foul of this one.
