I like the size of the new trackpad. But I rather dislike click-touch. It's a shame that Firewire was removed from the Macbooks.
The initial reviews of the trackpad are good, best to wait and see. And firewire to ethernet adaptors are available.

Re: The Apple Thread

Thinking about it, Ethernet and USB 2.0 most probably can't provide the power that is required for a 6 pin Firewire 400 adapter.

There's an informative comparition of the new laptops with last generation's at Anandtech. (The article isn't loading at the time of writing).

Nope, since that would be stoopid . My brother has a firewire device which he plugs into a USB port - I'll have to ask how he does it.

Has anyone found one of the new Macbooks in CH yet? AFAIK, no-one in Lausanne has any, nor a clue when they will get them. Does Apple Zurich have stock? And can you buy an international keyboard from them? Should I just give them a call myself instead of asking dumb questions...?

Edit: Oh, cross post...

Re: The Apple Thread

Hmm time for me to get rid of my old PowerBook. Yesterday, Steve Jobs said the new gear would be available in stores "tomorrow", I wonder if they already have them in the Geneva Apple store ?

Anyways I'll order online as I want a US keyboard and I guess that's not something they have in the retail stores' stock.

Re: The Apple Thread

There are rumors that Apple is about to kill the Mac Mini?

Oh, and:
CPU Benchmark for the new and old Macbook and Macbook Pro
Graphics Benchmark for the new and old MBP vs. the best iMac

Bottom line, it's an improvement in the graphics department but not in CPU power.

Re: The Apple Thread

Well I am happy to have my early 2008 MBP

The new MBP is much cheaper than the early MBP, significantly cheaper. And with all that graphics power would actually suit me better since I use it for Final Cut.

I was fortunate enough to walk into the Apple shop at just the time they had a new delivery of MBPs. The store had sold out of every delivery in no time at all, it was a question of being lucky

I am very happy with my new toy - MBP 2.4, currently with the stock 2GB memory. It is fast, really solid, the backlit keyboard is great, the trackpad is a joy... in short it is everything Lord Jobs said and a lot more. I had a problem with migration assistant over wifi (fault with my dying Powerbook G4) but using firewire the transfer of my old computer over to my new was also quick and painless. Time Machine ticks away in the background, first backup was about 10GB/hour (i.e. overnight), DVDs convert to ipod format using Handbrake in much less time than the DVD's length, the screen is bright, colours are vivid... very happy bunny...

Re: The Apple Thread

I bought a new iMac a couple of months ago which came with iLife included. With the release of iLife 09 is there anyway I can get a discount for a new user like you could with the last release of the OS?

The apple site only mentions a free upgrade for those who purchased new machines in January, unless I missed something. Might I have some luck walking into Dataquest (where I bought the machine) and asking for a discount there?

Seems quite a significant upgrade.

Re: The Apple Thread

Usually not. Apple sometimes give a backdated deadline for upgrades, but even then the discount isn't very great. If you get a discount, it will be because the store is being nice, since they won't be getting a discount from Apple.

I didn't realise that apple users actually had to get a life!

I saw an ad on the US Apple website and the "upgrade" was $79. It seems that this is a single user licence as opposed to the family pack 5 user licence for $99.

Saw that, was hoping for otherwise, just a month and a half too early...

Thanks all, guess I'll be splashing out the 109CHF

Think that's all they offer, unfortunitly they don't do upgrade editions of iLife.

Check with your employer to see if they get discounts via Apple's EPP (Employee Purchase Program). iLife goes for 90.30 chf. with the EPP.

Is it worth updating? I've the '08 version on my late 07 MBP.

I mostly want the package for the iPhoto update. It's got Facebook and Flickr intergration, both of which I'd use a lot, other features include geotagging, an improved editor and facial recognition. I'm just debating whether that's really worth 109CHF to me, as I hardly ever use the other applications (though I always wanted to do more stuff with iMovie).

As another poster mentioned, Google have just released Picasa for Mac. It is a beta but free. I'm pretty happy with iPhoto 08 as it goes and I don't use either Facebook or Flickr.

In my experience iMovie is limited, particularly as to what format it will take. I usually end up using other software to convert (and reduce quality) to something that is iMovie compatible. It is good for standard included software with your computer though.

Re: The Apple Thread

As I walked by a kiosk today, I noticed the headlines of IHT (I think) regarding the Windows 7 Alpha: "Microsoft repairs, but it's still Windows"

Apple has given the cheapest Macbook a silent upgrade (El Reg article). It's a valid option for an entry level Mac the next few months, especially considering that the Mac Mini is dead in the water.
  • CPU downgraded from 2.1 to 2.0 Ghz
  • FSB upgraded from 866 to 1066 Mhz
  • The miserable GMA X3100 has been replaced with a GeForce 9400M
  • Standard RAM upgraded from 1 GB to 2 GB
  • Yes, it still has FireWire 400
  • Same price as before
  • Already comes with iLife 09
