Squid game - to watch or not?

I'm guessing most people by now are aware of the Korean limited series called Squid Game. I'm conflicted if to watch it:

Pros:

It's by the creator of Parasite
It's bingeworthy
It's a masterpiece

Cons:
It's so brutal, violent and gruesome, it makes Game of Thrones look like Teletubbies.

Not sure I wish to be desensitized to this level of violence just for entertainment. Thoughts anyone?

Re: Squid game - to watch or not?

I hear the show is really brutal, but I think that level of violence is also nothing really new within the industry, it has existed for years, and as a TV and movie buff I was de-sensitized to that level of violence/gore/whatever many years ago. Hmm, maybe it's just a level of violence not as common on streaming platforms like Netflix.

Watch it.

My 15 year old daughter suggested it to me. I'm 4 episodes in now and so far it is very well made. The violence/gore is well done IMHO. Definitely bingeworthy.

Supposedly, oneself watches TV to relax, entertain, or any other positive outcome. If you feel stressed or the worst.......bored, well it's not for you. 100% subjective experience.

If it's from the creator of Parasite, I got bored with that one. It's like a monster movie where some characters make always the worst possible decisions and oneself should be entertained when the monster eat them later. This time the monster is not an outer space creature but emotions and lack of control. Cue the credits.

Re: Squid game - to watch or not?

Watch the Korean version with English subs, the dubbed version is quite comical. In terms of brutality about the same as GoT and below TWD imo.

Go for it. Not the best series ever but really good.
Regarding violence, nothing I have not seen in other movies/series before.

Re: Squid game - to watch or not?

The violence is too much but in keeping with many other Korean productions I've seen in the past tbf

I like the way it is filmed and acted, I too am roughly 4 episodes in

Re: Squid game - to watch or not?

Apparently the gore, on a scale of... Tangled to Hostel, is more in the Friday 13th remake vein, so not too bad.

It looks pretty interesting - and all my media students are all over it.

Yes the advice is original Korean with English subtitles then the humour comes through.

Well, I've started it and am totally baffled by the rules of the kids' game at the start!

Re: Squid game - to watch or not?

I watched the trailer for it last week or so, and the premise reminded me of The Hunger Games a bit. I assume it's entirely different, though. I'm not big on gore and seeing people get hurt (even if it is just a movie), so I think I'll skip it.

I honestly got a bit bored to start with. Didn't like the first character. Will try again another time maybe.

My 12 year old daughter watched 2 episodes and she said the violence looks totally fake. I might have done something wrong as a parent

From the stuff I've read about it, I think hyper-stylised is the intention.

I suspect that's a reflection of the critical response to the two series, the Japanese manga series suffers from weaker character development & less for viewers to invest in apart from the visuals
