Re: How long have you been in CH?

1989 - 32 years. Before the Berlin wall fell. When the only telephone company was the PTT. The Internet was not for the public. TV in English was only Super Channel, which wasn't....

Re: How long have you been in CH?

I think the question should include “and how long did you intend to stay”. For me that would be 36 years and two to three years.

If possible until the day I retire.

Feel free to start a new thread with that poll. And one for how long do you now intend to stay.

(For both questions - for the rest of my life).

Re: How long have you been in CH?

Twenty three years now.

As with every decision I've made in my adult life, we only came because of the dogs.

OH was asked to move to London back when there was no alternative to the abusive 6 months in a cold concrete cell quarantine. A non-starter, obviously. When he said no, OH''s company begged him to reconsider, offering anywhere in Europe. The Swiss embassy were the first to pick up the phone to answer my doggie questions, so here we are.

(Yes, the phone. Government agencies were still wary of this newfangled internet fad back then.)

Came for a year, max two. At 5 years the Muttley Crew, now expanded, were happy mountain climbers so we decided to stay. At 6 years, Oberglatt happened, the world changed, and I've had my bags packed, ready to leave, ever since. But I seem to always have at least one old dog unable to fly...

We're leaving in a few years. Honestly. Perhaps the reason the Multiverse sent Robin Goodfellow my way was to stop me from adopting any more dogs, so that I can finally go home.

Re: How long have you been in CH?

Forever.. it will be 50 years soon, almost my whole life time.

When I was growing up in Geneva, children had Wednesdays off but went to school on Saturday morning.
Migros was closed on Monday afternoon and if my memory is correct Coop was closed on Tuesday afternoon.
The bus was 70 cts and during the oil crisis you could drive your car depending on whether the last digit of your license plate was an odd or even number. I vaguely remember no driving allowed on Sundays and my Dad getting told off by the neighbors for mowing the lawn on Sunday.

Re: How long have you been in CH?

This year is 50 years. Came here with a saison visa and they asked me if I would stay. After only 2 years I became a C permit and the rest is history. When asked why I stayed in Switzerland I say, here I am always looking forward, in the GB I was looking behind.

Re: How long have you been in CH?

Just over 20 years. We arrived in Basel with two suitcases.

We left Basel in 2010. Never got around to changing my EF name.

Re: How long have you been in CH?

We got here yesterday. Now searching for a real house. The kid got a kick scooter this morning after seeing the local kids having one. Spent most of her savings on it.
As these are frowned upon in Japan and in the US generally only used in parks with thirty pounds of safety gear, she's thrilled. Me, I'm enjoying some Gamay on the balcony and talking to neighbors... I already know more neighbors here in a day and six hours than I did in our place in Japan over eight years and I don't speak the language (a few short words of greeting, I am fluent in Japanese though)... it's like many other places I've lived, friendly. I think we'll stay a while.
