Re: How has the pandemic affected you?

Haven't seen any family since one of our nephew's visited in December 2019, and I desperately want to see my OH's 92yr old mum. I've a gallery of mental snapshots of the last time I saw each of my loved ones.

My lifelong best mate is very relieved that she also visited in December 2019. She met a new man just after the first lockdown, is currently relocating and buying a new house with him. It feels very strange that I've never met him, but I'm thrilled for them both finding love in such trying times.

We've missed being able to support another nephew and his parents through his cancer diagnosis and resulting treatment, and later missed his wedding. Missed two funerals which I'd definitely have flown back to the UK for in normal circumstances. The wedding and one of the funerals were live streamed. Also haven't met my close friends' new daughter who is now 19mths old and gorgeous.

I'd just had a month off from my daily German classes when lockdown began, and haven't returned to them since.

I'm one of those weird people who's lost weight, exercised a lot more and cut down on alcohol since the first lockdown, including doing a couple of months without booze.

I miss gigs terribly. This is the longest I've ever gone without seeing a live band.

I've been lucky that the few people who disappointed me in their response to the pandemic, didn't come as too much of a surprise.

On a different note, I took part in the 'Great British Intelligence Test' 3 times over the last 20 months. According to the results, my short term memory and spatial awareness have taken a hammering. Apparently, the later is reinforced by moving through a crowded place, which we'd normally do daily and on autopilot.

Finally, the biggest downside for my OH is that I've planned several trips for the next couple of years. Not booked them yet, but I've got them planned and ready to go, right down to the bars and restaurants I want us to visit.

Re: How has the pandemic affected you?

Not being able to travel and see family was upsetting.
Otherwise, as an introvert, I actually felt quite comfortable during the pandemic.
I could interact warmly with others but didn’t have to constantly be in society.
Happy it ended though as we are social creatures and we need each other.

If you haven't seen elderly parents for 2 years- perhaps NOW is the time to make sure you go. You could very much regret it if you don't make that special effort now.

Re: How has the pandemic affected you?

Work wise, apart from the first 3 months where everything shut down, I have been more busy (which was surprising). Good financially, not so good physically and mentally.

Travel. Barely seen family and cancelled a shit load of travel plans. Managed 2 weeks in Mexico in April, but wasn’t very relaxing as we couldn’t be sure that test to return would come back negative.

Other than that, not much difference.

Re: How has the pandemic affected you?

Haven't commented in a long time since we are now in France but this is a relevant question across all countries, yes?

We are in the wine business. We own a vineyard. 2020 was the abyss. Literally, we had to sell our (perfectly delicious) wine to the distillerie for 90 centimes per liter AND THEY TURNED IT INTO HAND SANITISER.

We have had long periods of time here in France where all of the restaurants and hotels were completely closed. There were no weddings happening. There were no tourists. These are the major buyers of our wine.

2021 has been a bit better since July, but it is still nowhere near normal. On the bright side, we have gotten really creative with our sales techniques since we had to think outside the box and find some crazy ass customers that we would not have even thought of before. (Just FYI, they are rockin' and rollin' in Malta!)

Personally, it is the same as y'all. We have had 3 grandkids born since October 2019 that we have never met. (Evidently my children have done nothing during Covid except have sex and produce more humans.)

We fly from Paris next Wednesday to Charlotte, North Carolina to reconnect with 4 generations. Can't wait. (Just kidding--it will be a shit show, I am sure.)

Re: How has the pandemic affected you?

We've missed out on visitors from abroad. Good people we love and would love to see again.

But on the other hand, there are some who wanted to visit, whom we didn't want to see at all, and the pandemic saved us from all of that, not just the visit-that-wasn't (whew! yay!) but also the conversations to say no, etc. Now, that's all been settled and those relations won't be visiting again. That's a relief all round, and a real bonus brought about through covid.

There've also been several social events (e.g. neighbourhood party) which keep getting arranged and postponed, and it'll be nice once the organisers do [feel safe enough to] decide to go ahead.

Re: How has the pandemic affected you?

Great idea for a thread, sorry to all who who had major negative effects.

WFH a lot (Obvs) drink less coffee now when I've got to make it instead of just pressing a button. Switched coffee breaks for guitar breaks too.

Didn't see my parents for 18 months but happily got over recently before dad was taken into a home.

Fitness took a hammering, 4 or 5 days a week in the Gym adjoining the office dropped to a couple of sessions a week on the turbo trainer in the basement. I was surprised to find that when the gym isn't next door I'm actually pretty lazy.

Missed concerts, hugs and chewing the fat over a pint.

Biggest thing for me I think is the change in friendships and familial relationships caused by shock at what they believe. An uncle is fully onboard the 'it's a hoax plandemic" and I assumed I had reasonably well informed and socially responsible friends, but it turns out there's a decent proportion that are the opposite. And exclusively amongst the more new-age friends.
