patent pending....so is this lucky number 8 for you, rusty?
It depends. How many orders would you be placing, Mrs Otter?

To answer your unasked question, yes I believe customised extra-large and vibrating models could be built, but I cannot guarantee that they will necessarily blend well with the rest of your collection.

I have one - bought about 9 months ago from Mediamarkt - and the jury is out on it.

'For' is fairly obvious - it does a boring chore for you at a set time (using the inbuilt timer) while you're out doing something more interesting.

'Against' - it's noisy and bashes about in a robust way, so you actually need to be out or shut the door on it when it's working if you at home.

It works best in an empty room, the more furniture, carpets etc you have, the more opportunities there are for Roomba to get stuck or tangled in wires (and switch off) or miss bits.

For me the biggest drag is having to empty the dirt box after each session. We have a cat and that means plenty of hair and fluff. I found that using a conventional vacuum cleaner to suck out Roomba's dirt box, brushes etc is the quickest cleanest method - but a bit daft.

Also I had to buy from the USA on ebay.ch a pack of replacement circular brushes (CHF36 for 6), the red arms of the two supplied broke off within weeks.

On balance if you have large open rooms with little clutter and are out working every day, Roomba could be your dream. But at nearly CHF700, you may feel doing the hoovering yourself and spending the money on something else is a better bet...

Re: The Gadget Thread

Thanks for the full review of the Roomba, Abfab.
The part about cleaning its insides with a vacuum cleaner made me smile.

Hi Abfab, thanks for the great review! CHF700 is kinda steep though, the link i received pointed to a USD130 Roomba. May I ask which model u have?

It's the all singing all dancing 560 top of the range model - the only one Mediamarkt sold. Perhaps mail order would be better, but make sure what you get - or don't get with lesser models...

thanks, i'll see if i can order 1 online from a european dealer, but i think the choice is smaller here. i once made a major booboo, ordering a slow cooker from amazon in the US, but forgot the power rating is different here

Still thinking of getting a roomba, does it cope ok getting in between rooms?

This pic is currently going around the webs, long exposure of how the roomba goes around a room

It's actually quite good at getting right up to the edge and into 90° corners, but mine is the model with the rotation brush. It also comes with two battery-powered 'lighthouses' that can be set to keep it confined or lat roomba out to another area when it's finished.

I have no complaints at all about its cleaning ability. See a demo here:

I should have re-phrased this but I got Daleks into my head.

So, does it have IR sensors on the underside to detect a drop-off in floor level?

No idea what the sensors are, but it won't drop down the stairs...
