I just finished another: girl breaks up with idiot, meets man of dreams, does something stupid, but they live happily ever after book.
Load of crap really, but it makes a nice escape from reality.
Anybody want it?
A girl like you, by Gemma Burgess.

Just finished one of the best written, challenging and most beautiful books I have ever read. The Lantern by Deborah Lawrenson. For lovers of the Provence a must.

Randolph Quirk. It's monstrous. But so rewarding.

Germinal and Middle march were both a good read. I have just finished the Small House by Anthony Trollope. A bit soppy but enjoyable.

Constance, the tragic and scandalous life of Mrs Oscar Wilde by Franny Moyle. Just started it and enjoying it. From what I've read so far I can imagine this story would also make a great film.

El contenido del silencio by Lucía Etxebarria. It doesn't seem to be translated to English yet, but if it does, it is an addictive book that you won't be able to put down. Excellent long haul book choice, IMHO

Hi
just finished Ed Mcbains - 'Big, Bad City' - its about a american detective departmentand its part of a major set of books all centered around this one group called the 87th precient.
this book is about man who killed a dective dad and is now trying to kill the dective.
i really recommend ANYTHING by Ed Mcbain. they are easy to get into and really easy to get lost in with lots of surpises and shocks
Not sure about my next book, maybe A History of God - Karen Armstrong or Watership Down - Richard Adams
are there any reading groups in basel?

As usual several in parallel. Now, four
- "Die Schweiz wäscht weisser" of Prof Jean Ziegler; a full report about money laundering and similar "activities" of banks in Switzerland
- "Matto regiert" of Friedrich Glauser, a crime novel written in 1936, really good
- "Lügen im Heiligen Land" a critical essay about politics and life between Nile and Euphrates, written by the "primus-inter-pares" of international political journalism, Peter Scholl-Latour. PSL started active journalism in 1950 and is still active now
- "Wein A-Z" by Ulrich Sautter, entertainingly written, excellent information

A month or so ago I read Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. Concise and informative read for anyone who wants to get into strength training and learn (or relearn) the basic barbell lifts. I've lifted weights my whole life and I discovered everything I was doing wrong through this book - highly recommend to everyone.
I'm currently reading Practical Programming for Strength Training, the follow up to Starting Strength which goes into details of periodization in training. Also an excellent resource.

Title: Vedic Mathmatics, Teacher's Manual, Elementary Level
Author: Kenneth Williams
Published by Inspiration Books, 2009,
Kensglen, Nr Carsphairn, Castle Douglas, DG7 3TE, Scotland, U.K.
ISBN 978-1-902517-16-2

First published in 2002 by Inspiration Books.
Revised edition 2009.
I highly recommend any Vedic Mathematics textbook for any parent. It's fascinating to see kids work these mental math tricks.
For example, how to multiply any number times 11.
Say 45,
45 x 11.
There are 3 steps to find the answer.
I'll just call it the "11 sandwich" trick.
so split the number in half like this. 4_5.
those are the first and last numbers.
then find the digit sum of 45, or 4+5 = 9.
then put the 9 in the middle (4_5)
495. Easy right?
Cheers!
