Re: Here we come, Barcelona!!!

Lessee now... we were there last weekend. Some random observations...

1. Barcelona public transport is superb.

2. Food and general shopping is dirt cheap.

3. La Ramblas is a tourist trap, full of drunken English/Americans and bars selling pints for EUR 9-10. There's also a lot of cafes etc which have eg english menus and rely on non-return business. Passeig de Gracias is 50x better. Get off the beaten track a little.

4. There's no shopping on Sundays.

5. If you don't have a Swiss/EU passport then be prepared for a wait at immigration. They are very touchy at the moment, probably because of the various trials and hijackings etc going on.

6. Don't make it easy for pickpockets. Keep your wallet in your front pockets, and handbags where they can't be snatched.

7. There were massive tourist queues at some Gaudi sights, eg 1.5 hour waits at the cathedral.

Despite all that - we had a great old time.

Re: Here we come, Barcelona!!!

be careful where you eat in Barcelona! You can eat like a king and pay like a pauper, and the other way round.

10 days is a long time to spend in Barcelona, but you can get a lot done. I recommend taking the bus tour, you can get info on these from Columbus' column, which you can't miss. A 2 day tour (hop on and off) is worth it, and use these to get a good idea of the layout of the city and where what is. Then go back to what you liked.

Must see in Barcelona:

Montjuic: the national palace is on this hill/park. It is spectacular and has great views over Barca. There is also the Magical fountain there, make sure you get to the evening shows for this.

Check out these pics of Montjuic

If you like art, you are in the right place. The Picasso museum will blow you away. It is in the Gothic quarter adn you'll need a day for this. There is the 4 Gats cafe, but be prepared for disappointment. It's a tourist hovel.

Antoni Gaudi defines Barcelone is many ways. Check out these pics of things to see, The Sagra de Familia is incredible. Park Guell is a sea of tourists.

STAY AWAY FROM LAS RAMBLAS. Unless you like the Oxford street/ Covent Gardens type tourist madness that can only be solved with a Combine Harvester.

You are well situated for day trips, like to Girona. There is a great old city there, I don't have too many pics from Girona, but there are a couple here

You'd want to eat out of Barcelona, eating in Girona, 2 people, 3 courses, coffe and a drink - €16 for the lot. You could never get that in Barca.

There is the Dali museum in Figeuroa, sadly i never made it there.

If you are staying in an apartment, buy your food at the Super Mercado in town, it's a big indoor market.

That's all for now, if I think of anythihng else I'll add it on. Check out Flickr for things to see and do, it's great.

Check these mini-guides out. I have used them a few times for various cities and find them great. They are easy to follow, good directions, and have great reccomendations. Just select which categories you want included in your guide, then create it and print it off....easy and free!

PS. Had a great time in Barcelona, great food and nightlife. A cool little Jazz club ( http://www.masimas.com/jamboree/0_0/INI/default.htm )....good for a night out and something different

Re: Here we come, Barcelona!!!

Restaurant tip... head for the Marina and you will see the Royal (Real) Yacht Club and an outdoor terrace restaurant with a blue canopy. It looks private but round the back is a public entrance to the restaurant. You're surrounded by zillion dollar yachts, food is really very good, no tourists and it's pretty cheap. I can also recccomend the Picasso museum - go on Sunday it's free

Re: Here we come, Barcelona!!!

Be aware of an often-mentioned pickpocket scam: someone may secretly squirt stuff on your clothes, and then rush up saying that a bird has crapped on you and that they will help you clean it off. While they are brushing it off they will go through your pockets.

A second one is where they use the distraction technique: a gypsy may wave a piece of paper or a petition in front of you, and "pat" you in gratitude if you stop and look at it... We saw a couple of these lurking around outside Sagra de Familia.

Long story short, be very suspicious of any stranger that suddenly wants to touch you or "help" you.
