German music [to aid in learning German]

hi, following my other "not progressing in german anymore" thread, i'm thinking of ways to develop a love for german, if that were indeed possible. 1 specific area i'm looking at is music. i already listen to a few bands (fantastischen vier, silbermond, xavier naidoo etc) but find that the german pronunciation doesn't let itself blend easily with a melody. or maybe i'm the only one who thinks so.

i'm hoping to get some recommendations from the EF folks for german bands and singers, preferably with not too colloquail

A few years back I started listening to Wir Sind Helden, Juli and Silbermond. To my surprise I very quickly found myself singing along with the lyrics.

Lately I find myseld singing along when Pluesch or a few other Swiss German bands come on the radio. If you want to pick up Swiss German I think listening to Pluesch is a pretty good idea. Their music is not bad either (IMHO).

Re: German music

This one is quite amusing, but don't listen to it if you understand German and are easily offended.

By the way, I'm not going to post the lyrics for this one!

Re: German music

Anything belonging to the general Schlager genre, or even better (IMHO) Neue Deutsche Welle music should steer you in the right direction. I've come across some gems as EAV (though they are Austrian and their dialect is somewhat noticable), Geier Sturzflug (Bruttosozialprodukt) or Peter Schilling's Major Tom, which I had heard countless times before actually hearing what it was called. Throw in some Rosenstolz (more current than the previous) and you've crossed three decades.

I could go on. And I add a disclaimer that they're for German learning rather than for a complete music appreciation experience!

Because the only appreciation to be gotten is when the song finishes you appreciate the fact that the aural torture is over!

Re: German music

any chance there's something more lo-fi like simon/garfunkel or jazzlich like dinah washington? since its for learning/practising german, i'd prefer something slower, less angsty and in a normal human voice

Re: German music

Try Farin Urlaub, he has an articulate voice, sings in High German and the music is far from boring. Personally I like it a lot.

I've listened to the two albums I have from him here and I think they're good material for exercising your understanding of German at an intermediate level.

Farin Urlaub - Am Ende der Sonne
Farin Urlaub Racing Team - Live Album Of Death

Yes it's a live album but mixed in a way that doesn't distract.

hmm...i just refreshed my memory of what rammstein sounded like. it makes me want to throttle cute furry animals

-Plüsch is nubbad, very listenable.
-wir sind helden got some great riffs! (what have i been all this while?)
-Juli is good too, and their lead is cute heh
-EAV/Geier Sturzflugare are excellent, esp for the german
-Farin Urlaub is nubbad too. i used to listen to a lot of industrial and progressive rock, this quite brings me back to those years. excellent pronunciation too, very crisp.

i feel my world expanding...

Re: German music

you will either love her or hate her! there is a lot in her lyrics go and find it...

fragt mich leise was ich wirklich will

Was du einmal warst
