Recovering nicely after surgery

On Monday13.04.2009 I underwent surgery for Wikipedia reference-linkspinal stenosis, a condition which had been causing occasionally severe pain in the back of the legs for the last few years. Recovery has been (touch wood!!) unexpectedly smooth so far: on Thursday I was discharged from hospital to a rehabilitation facility (skilled nursing home), and on Sunday I was able to leave that and am currently staying with friends.

During that period I graduated from painfully getting out of bed and "walking" a couple of feet to a chair with a walker, to walking around the hospital with the walker, to walking in the skilled nursing facility with a cane, to walking around my friends' home without a cane, using the latter only outdoors. Having taken good care of my body when healthy, my body reciprocated by taking good care of me when I needed it!

It will be another three months at best before I am allowed to hike (spine needs a lot of tender loving care at this moment) so my annual trip to Switzerland is off. Hope to be back next year!

Glad to hear you are recovering and we'll try to save the amazing weather we've been having over here for your next trip. The last month has been the most consistently nice weather since I arrived about a year ago. Hopefully, by your next trip you'll be healthy enough to climb the Matterhorn.

Good Luck!

Recovery (from an operation) is a slow (and sometimes frustrating) process but in a few months I am sure your legs will feel as good as new

Interesting what you say there RetiredInNH, I think that is so very true.

Update

Three months after surgery (about ten days ago) I saw my surgeon, who was very pleased with both the healing of the spine and my progress with physical therapy. He removed all restrictions on my activities, which meant that I could hike!

Does the above collection of smilies indicate how I felt?

Well, next day I obviously did a vastly over ambitious hike ... fortunately I learned my lesson and started doing small but enjoyable hikes. I am gradually increasing the length and elevation gain, hope to be doing decent hikes in ten days when a friend joins me for the weekend.

Life is good!

Re: Recovering nicely after surgery

That is good news, no wonder you're over the moon - perfect timing too as the best weather for hikes, here at least, is late Summer early Autumn, you should be back into the swing of it by then
