What to Shop in South Africa?

This question is for people who have lived/visited south africa

My husband is travelling to south africa-Johansburg on business for 3 weeks. I was wondering what South african speciality he could buy while he is there...like local arts, beads, textiles, wooden toys/puzzles. Is there something that anyone here thinks....oh! 'If you have been there then it would be great to buy this'.
I did my bit of reaserch on the internet but it would nice to hear from people who have had first hand experience.
Any tips/suggestions on good place to shop and general tips about the city will be greatly appreciated...

Thank you all in advance

Re: What to Shop in South Africa?

I am from Cape Town but I am pretty sure I can give some advice.

First of all, I think it is safe to say not to go anywhere in the center of Johannesburg unless it has been ratified by his hosts or hotel etc.

For an unitiated tourist there are very definate no go areas and a great deal of common sense needs to be exercised eg not carrying visible large amounts of money or cameras etc. My motherland is getting better but the incidence of violent crime and robbery is still way way above any place in Europe.

Now that that is out of the way, he can ask at his hotel or host etc where a good art and crafts market is as he will be able to get all sorts of African style art for a fraction of what you will pay in Europe. The markets are not dirt cheap anymore however, but you will get curios and art from all over Africa.

You can actually order a hand crafted dining room table and chairs from a central african craftsman and arrange to get it shipped over if thats your thing, but all arrangements will be ad hoc.

Maybe some people here from JHB can point you in the right direction as to specific locations.

Hi there Bindu

If you are looking for local curios, one of the best places is the "Rosebank Rooftop market". This is one of the best places in JHB to find true African effects.

If you are into bargaining, it can also be fun ;-)

Have fun
Nats

Re: What to Shop in South Africa?

Those who live in different cities than Joburg it might be easy to say that dont go to Johannesburg or Gauteng anywhere which is absolutely a tosh. While it might be true about places like Hillbrow and Berea but you can go visit places like Rosbank and its market, Sandton, Fourways and anything in the vicinity of posh areas. Common sense like everywhere else would dictate no to display your valuable belongings and flash your wallet.

If you come visit Pretoria there is flea market in Hatfield Square, at Union Buildings and outside the city there is Hartbeestpoort Dam direction where going towards Rustneberg you will find a large flea market with curios e.g. woodcraft, beadwork, mats, necklaces, jewellery, earings, stones, absolute glamour of south African art, dont forget to go to sangoma (natural healer) or muti.

I would go for Amarula liqueur as a present and other Big-Five spirit stuff.
Dont forget to have a braai (BBQ) and go watch rugby match There is gazillion of things to do in SA. Just to have an idea of curio have a look here. Then look for relevant stuff and buy them at flea market which is a subject to bargaining

BTW: Since you need a car to travel in SA comfortably and without any surprises the location JHB and PTA are 60km apart.

Fantagrape

BTW: Swiss consumer market makes a progress with 2L sizes of Coke & Fanta bottles after introducing Lidl, but with no avail of fabulous Fantagrape so long.
