UK: how much does NHS cost?

I'm currently active with a local (i.e. in Ticino) "social" (not socialist, mind you) Forum and there is a raging debate about health insurance costs, yada yada....
In UK there is this National Health System - a sort of "social" Krankenkasse - and my question is: how much does it cost per person /year? (didn't find anything on their website)

What are the benefits, if any, vs. the swiss system?

Thx

Paul

well you pay for it via your NI contributions (if you work)

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/nic.htm

but I don't think that come anywhere near to covering the cost

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/1935730.stm

given there are 60m odd people in the uk it works out to 1760 per person for 07/08

eta

benefits, well its 'free' so your get ill you don't get any nasty bills
where it falls down is you'll wait weeks or months to see a specialist, you can't just walk in and see a DR you have to book, and unless your dying you wont be able to get an appointment, everything takes at least 10x longer then it should

eg my best mate in the uk has suffering chronic stomach problems for months, nhs gave him this that and the other but couldn't find the problem and kept sending him away, in the end he went private and they diagnosed cancer straight away, give the nhs credit they then treated the cancer and he has been clear for the past 4 years.

Thanks for the links! What do you mean with the last bit (in red)?

Paul

Once the private hospital diagnosed him the nhs treated him, private treatment for cancer would have cost many 10's of thousands of pounds.

When we lived in the UK we also had to bypass the nhs and pay to see a specialist first, then get the treatment on NHS, fine if you have the money, not so good if you don't!

Personally I think the swiss system is better, I can see a dr whenever I like and if I get referred it happens straight away, not months down the line.

Re: UK: how much does NHS cost?

All of my relations in the UK, who can afford it, have private medical insurance but, they still have to pay the full NHI contribution as well. That makes it very expensive.

Both my wife and myself have had big operations and were we glad we were in Switzerland !

To interpret that little lot, for the majority of employees that's 11% employee contributions up to 844 per week (43'888 p.a.), then 1% for earnings above that. Plus 12.8% employer's contribution, with no upper limit.

But NIC also covers unemployment benefits and state pension, so it's not at all simple.

The correct term is "Free at the point of delivery". I think it was during the 1980s that what we used to know as NHI (National Health Insurance) automagically became NI, so many assumed that the health element was being diverted to other things (e.g. unemployment benefits).

For a while there were signs that Thatcher might introduce tax relief for private medical insurance, but for whatever reason that didn't happen.

The unfortunate thing about the NHS is that although many believe it could do with serious reform (along the lines of Switzerland, France or Spain?), it is regarded as too much of a political hot potato.

Ditto with the (relatively minor) treatment I have had.

11% p.a., that is, for those who make 844/wk, do I understand correctly?
In that 11% state pension is somehow / somewhat included?

Anyway - it sure looks more expensive than CH.... but then again the way things are going over here we could be hitting UK numbers pretty soon

BTW, Willem Buiter has this little piece on FT.com:

Re: UK: how much does NHS cost?

But, let's not forget that the UK national health service runs with a big deficit - over 500 million in 2006.

So, some of your tax money also goes towards the cost.
