Short break in Lapland

My husband and I are thinking of a short break in Lapland before Christmas with our two children (6yr & 4yr) Does anyone have a recommendation of where to stay or a travel company they booked with. Having looked on the internet there are so many options available I'm really not sure where to start. Many thanks for your help

I wonder why there are too many options to visit Tundra, chilly, Mosquitoy, mostly flat, not so special place like Lapland !
Take a day trip to Alpine passes and you'll see better view of tundras.

Aurora might be the only reason for me to go there.

Re: Short break in Lapland

Hi, a few years back a group of us found a good deal and stayed in the resort of Levi. We chose it to do a bit of intro level snowboarding here (this was years before we chose to live in Switzerland!).

The location may be a little far to walk into town with children, as it took us about 15 mins or so, over snow and ice. However, it has a peaceful location and the standard of cabins and built in sauna made up for the cold walk!

We flew over in January, which at it's best, hit minus 25! but the average was nearer zero. THe temps are much more reasonable in December.

Generally, the holiday agent can provide all sorts of entertainment...including husky rides, reindeer trips, snowmobiling, a traditional Finnish evening; i appreciate these are not all suitable for children, but I do recall there being families around, so there must also have been suitable entertainment. ( I would assume that there is a trip to visit Santa).

Check out the general tourism website http://www.visitfinland.com it will give you a better idea of what there is to do and where to stay.

We booked through Kontikisaga/ Destination Lapland and stayed 1 week in äkäslompolo. Absolutely fantastic holiday! Snow mobiles, Reindeer sleighs, northern lights and dog sled; we did it all.

You might want to try this address: www.yllas-travel-service.fi

You MUST book the dog sled excursion if you go.

I must have done 8+ holidays with the people from Specialised Tours, a UK based Scandanavian specialist operator. Can't recommend them highly enough for personalised or small group trips. Lapland is a particular favourite for me; snowmobiles, ice-breaker ships, Sami visits, huskies, ice-palaces etc

Lucky you!

Re: Short break in Lapland

Anyone with more recent experience going for a short break with children (2-3 nights). Is worth it given the distance?
