You always pay sales tax when importing goods into Switzerland don't you?
I agree; it's a shame that they don't drop the VAT as this would make up for the import duties. Shipping is excellent value at €5 - absolutely nobody should quibble about that.

They say "I confirm that I am over 18 and a resident within the European Union" in their T&Cs. So when ordering from Switzerland, would we be breaching this condition or are they by delivering here?

From the swiss customs website:

Quote:
Taxes

In principle, all postal items from foreign countries are subject to duty and VAT.

Customs duty
Duty is calculated on the gross weight of the postal item. Duty rates are usually less than CHF 1.- per kilogramme. However, alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, food and textiles are subject to higher duty rates.

Value added tax (VAT)
VAT is calculated on the amount which the importer has to pay and the additional costs up to the first destination (transport costs and postal charges) as well as import duties and fees (e.g. examination fee).

If the goods are not imported as a result of a sale, VAT is calculated on the market value and additional costs up to the first destination, i.e. the amount which a purchaser would have to pay for the imported items.

VAT is determined on the basis of the declaration provided by the foreign sender, who has to provide evidence of the value of the goods by enclosing a copy of the invoice or another proof of value (internet print-out, contract of sale etc.). If no value is declared, the customs office will set the tax base ex officio. The same applies if the accuracy of the declaration is in doubt; in that case, a higher import fee should be expected.

Values expressed in a foreign currency are calculated by the customs office on the basis of the exchange rate (selling rate) applicable on the last stock exchange trading day prior to customs clearance.

The current VAT rate is 7.6% (standard rate).

For certain goods, a reduced rate of 2.4% applies, e.g. for food and beverages (excluding alcoholic drinks), bound or paperback books with at least 16 pages, non-promotional magazines and medicine registered in Switzerland and classified in tax categories A to D.

If an item contains goods which are taxed at the regular rate and goods which are taxed at the reduced rate (e.g. books combined with CDs or tapes), the item is taxed at the regular rate if the foreign sender does not state the price of each individual component separately (e.g. book and CD) in the declaration.

Exceptions
There is no specific allowance as for travellers, only a tax-exemption limit, whereby customs duty and VAT are not levied if they amount to CHF 5.- or less per customs declaration.

Gifts sent by private persons resident abroad to private persons in Switzerland are tax free up to a value of SFr.100. Tobacco products and alcoholic beverages are not allowed. Goods bought at an internet auction are subject to tax in accordance with the general regulations.
Hope that helps

Pat

And have they been delivered already from next with no customs? maybe that is the key then? although not suer i want to try it again, I ordered 6 items which I highly expect to send some back which makes the customs charge even more frustrating

By the way how long did it take them to deliver Mr Organs shorts (sounds a very suggestive name )

This info only appears at the bottom of the page when you have items in your basket and proceed to pay. This was the best link I could attach above.

did the packaging it came in have logos etc... on? I have found that if something is sent with obvious store branding on then you get stung but if it's in plain brown packaging you have more chance of getting away with it

I have ordered lots of items from Play - some arrived several at a time and have never been charged customs - but then i ordered some ski stuff from the UK and it was sent via a courier in branded packaging and i was charged customs, what i have learnt is items that go via a parcel/courier service i.e UPS etc... (i have always had a customs charge) I have rarely had customs charges for general postal items - usually with courier parcels i receive the bill in the post at a later date - but the next parcels have come via the post as i have had a post office slip to pay direct there when i collect the items

Re: Wow!! Nextdirectory.eu

I think customs charges are a bit hit and miss, maybe they just check a sample of packages. They have to be over a certain value before they even think of charging. I get a lot of stuff from Amazon UK, some are charged, others not.

I'd love to see a Next store here, it's one of the few shops that doesn't assume that if you are a tall man , you must also be round man. Back in the UK and just went yesterday to get trousers that are long enough, and slim fit XL shirts and tops.

Unfortunately, I got charged customs too when a friends sent something over from the UK as a gift. I told him to declare it as a gift, which he did but he also put the value of the item as 55 quid.

I read somewhere that you will not get charged customs for anything under 100 CHF. My amazon parcels have all been under that and I've not been charged. I need to look for that link.

Re: Wow!! Nextdirectory.eu

OK an update

Picked up my parcel - asked at the post office about the customs charge and if i get refunded if I send the parcel back - she said no it's just a customs handling charge! great!

Also reading the returns note inside the package - 'Postage must be paid by the sender and will not be refunded by next'

double great

so all in all a crap service and no point using it

Re: Wow!! Nextdirectory.eu

more feedback

Just spoken to a guy at Next - very helpful indeed

Told him the situation, he was surprised - I explained Switzerland is not in the EU (durr) etc.... I said if sending to an EU country then customs is not a problem but to Switzerland it is a different kettle of fish - he said they have only recently added Switzerland as an option - someone didn't do their homework it seems

Anyway he is going to look into refunding me the £30 customs charge i had to pay to collect the parcel and he's going to go and relay our conversation to whoever is in charge see what they can do to make the service work - also mentioned that if we have to pay customs and then pay postage to send unwanted items back it makes it a pointless service and he agreed and will discuss that too - it may mean the CH option is pulled when they realise that CH is not EU - anyway he will call back and let me know the outcome

I did say that if they can find a solution and get around this problem that they are likely to have lots of customers over here

Fingers crossed that a) i get reimbursed and b) they find a working solution

Nicky
