Can anyone recommend family beach holidays in Italy ?

Hi, I am looking for a short 4 night family beach holiday in Italy.

We live in Lugano and really dont want to drive more than 3 hours.

I realsie that this may limit my options but if anyone knows some good areas I would really appreciate you sharing the information

thanks

I can tell you where not to go! We got the ferry to Corsica from Savona and spent a few days around Savona and Celle Ligure in Italy. Both places were awful! Lots of dog pooh and no where for kids to play football, etc on the beach (signs with "no ball games" on the beach!!).

I would recommend Corsica though, the ferry is quite cheap but it is a 6 hour crossing.

Although Italy has some great coastlines Iím not a fan of beach holidays in Italy not least because theyíre often over-crowded and not very clean. Also be careful - some of the stretches of the beach are private and you have to pay for access, especially on the Tuscan coast.

I think the best beach resorts in Northern Italy are along the Mediterranean coast in Liguria or along the Adriatic coast. The latter is probably too far for you so I would head for Liguria which should be under 4 hours, traffic permitting. Thereís no getting away from the fact the Riviera isnít cheap but take a look at Levanto. Itís got the longest and best beach in the region. If youíre looking for a hotel, browse through the comments on Tripadvisor which I always find useful:

I would avoid resorts at the southern end of the Riviera like Viareggio. Horrible.

The closest location from Lugano would be Liguria, heading South to Genova and then choose the East or the West coast of the region.

I prefer the East part, from Chiavari and Sestri Levante heading to East. It's probably more quiet and cosy than the the western part.

Anyway, speaking of prices and possibilities to have fun especially for kids, I'd rather go to Romagna on the Adriatic sea (Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Milano Marittima....). This is not very far from Lugano: once in Milano head to Bologna and then to coast.

Thanks for the reply, now I can have a list "where not to go" which also helps.

We had a nice holiday in Sardinia , I recommend Valle Del Erica Hotel for Spa and kids club (best for under 10,s I think )

We just want an extra few days away with beach for kids, bucket and spade job ! But just dont want to have to drive too far.

Senigallia in Italy has nice beaches for kids but just dont fancy the long drive this time for such a short break.

Ciao, how about Varigotti? It's a lot quieter in september, but Finale and Finalborgo are not too far away.
