SLR Nikon lens advise

I was about to buy Nikkor lens AF-S DX 18/200mm f/3.5-5.6 GIF-ED VR and then I saw the new one: AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR Ⅱ
And now I wonder if I have to buy the new or the old one. According to some reviews the new one is an improved version of the old well known one . The price is similar. I will be going on a 2 weeks vacation in Oct so I want to have the new lense by then.

Any recommendations or advises?

ps I hope this is the right sub-forum. Apologies if the selection is not correct.

Hi saraCan,

I can't offer you advice about Nikon kit I'm afraid, as I'm a Canon user. However I do know someone who can...

We have a EF Photoclub here in Basel, with a sticky thread here - Basel Photoclub
And a few of the people who come along use Nikons. Begga in particular recently got an 18-200 for her's, so she might be able to help you.

Hope this helps

Re: SLR Nikon lens advise

Is the new 18-200 already available? Thought it's only being released sometime in Sept.

In any case, the new version is supposed to address the zoom creep issue which I personally have NOT experienced. I guess if the price between the new and old one is similar, I would go for the newer one. But it is a really nice travel lens!

Re: SLR Nikon lens advise

@Butters: Yes Butters, I am well aware of the Basel Photo club as I have attended 1-2 meetings but the sticky, based on my understanding, is for general discussion, not individual product/advise questions.

Dragonblu, the press release on NIkon's site says July. on toppreise.ch and amazon.de, the product is listed along with price and it looks like you can order and get it when available. (even the pic of the lens is with the new lens with II after the G)

I callsed foto Marlin (or so) today, and they told me that they have it although I am not sure they really have the new one but I will go and check. The price they sell the lens is 848fr so not sure which one it is.

Re: SLR Nikon lens advise

I bought my 18-200mm @ Marlin as well (we really need to push him for a discount for club members!!)
Have to admit that I was not really looking "what is new", but my two Nikon maestro's had recommended that lens for a long time and I simply couldn't wait no longer...
Marlin made a good offer of that lens (the old one), and so I bought it and i think it was about 3 days later I found out about the VRII Well, that's life... just can't say i'm unhappy though, this is so great-great lens! You will not be disappointed, I can tell you that for sure!
