Re: The nuclear threat

Interesting, but I guess it's somewhat missleading as only a fraction of those nukes are necessary to wipe out all major cities, all infrastructure and a large proportion of world population. It's not like they'd bother nuking all of Russia.

Re: The nuclear threat

I read a long time ago that it would only require 120 - 150 one megaton warheads detonated in key parts of the world to effectively end civilisation, and place whoever was left back in the stone age.

Can't cite the source as it was a long time ago that I read that.

Re: The nuclear threat

Interesting I suppose but childishly simplistic and misleading.

The author can't even decide if the question is "how many nukes to destroy the world?", "how many nukes to destroy humanity?" or "how many nukes to wipe out civilisation?" which are clearly 3 different questions with 3 very different answers.

Re: The nuclear threat

I found it interesting because I've always had this childish notion that life on earth (apart from cockroaches) could be snuffed out by a nuclear holocaust, but apparently that isn't even remotely true. Even if the gates of hell were unleashed, there would still be several billion left to tell the tale.

Re: The nuclear threat

I read that article too, but it seems to only take the inital explosion into account.

What about fallout and radiation?

Re: The nuclear threat

We had a good discussion about how we'd get through a nuclear war in the 'biggest threat' thread, I think and, if I remember correctly, you would really have to do a job with the current batch of nukes to kill off everyone.
Nope, if you really want to do the job, you need the bomb the UK threatened to make in the 1960s. In stead of tamping your H-bomb with a heavy depleted uranium layer, you replace it with cobalt. The cobalt gets irradiated by the neutrons and is vaporised. Put enough cobalt around the bomb, then you can poison the entire planet (people, mammals, birds, the lot) with highly radioactive cobalt isotopes, which remain active for about four years. Whatever makes it through that will be highly deformed, assuming it is capable of viable reproduction.
And thus, one small country which could produce one or two H-bombs can sit at the table with the big boys...
If it's any help, the writer of Threads (possibly one of the nastiest little films I've ever watched) reckoned that one strike by a Soviet SS-18 missile on a large city would overwhelm all the resources of the NHS. It really doesn't take much to collapse a country.
