Re: Song of the day

Funny how one hand 'conducts' the other. I discovered Gould 18 years ago. Keeps surprising me. This is the 25th variation of Bach´s Goldberg Variations.

Interview with him about this piece:

1st part

2nd part
favourite quote 7:42 (about the '55 version): "it seems to say, please take note 'this is tragedy', doesn't have the dignity to bear its suffering in quiet resignation"

3rd part

This stuff, in contrast, will make you feel your age:

... not that that's such a bad thing with music as mellow as this...
That 2nd one is currently used on a Toyota advert.

One from the psychedelic 60's. I love the way the flautist is counting in the drummer half way through.

Actually I believe it's very respectful of the original. These guys show a good understanding of Mussorgsky.

Ry Cooder will forever be a hero to me for saving the first Captain Beefheart album:

He quickly made his exit...Don Van Vliet was a bit much for him... Safe as Milk was released in 1967, less than two years later The Magic Band emerged from months of cloistered work and starvation with the landmark Trout Mask Replica:

All composed on piano by Van Vliet, who had never played before, and somehow transcribed into notation by drummer John French and arranged for the band. Too cool for school, man .

Re: Song of the day

Not the best version I've heard of this but the full song (and seems appropriate given the mood of the forum today):

Great song. One of my favourite Genesis tracks of all time. I prefer Peter Gabriel's vocals to Phil Collins' for this though.

I agree, Gabriel's deeper voice fits better on that one.

Re: Song of the day

Sorry but could not find a good version when posted Pacifique :

!

The lyrics are from the Solomon Islands (small islands north of Australia).
(Baegu)
Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu
Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau
Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
Tabe ta wane initoa te ai rofia

Sasi sasi ae kwa dao mata ole
Rowelae e lea kwa dao mata biru
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri

Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu
Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau
Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri

Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place

Little brother, little brother even in the gardens
This lullaby continues to the different divisions of the garden,
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us

Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
