Personally, I think they'll push it back to the end of the month (or even August), as they're struggling to keep up with demand in the US and the UK.

given Sunrise's market strategy, I think it's safe to assume that their deal will be cheaper than the others'.

I just hope the iPhone won't do the same thing to the Sunrise network it has done to Swisscom's.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Oh and regarding iOS - I installed it last night and my iPhone 3G is now actually faster then with OS3 (After about 4 hours to install and a restart anyway). No problems discovered so far - all the app's I've tried run work normally too.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

I wonder about something...about a year or so ago I purchased a contract free iPhone3gs from Swisscom via our corp connections for a good price. It is not unlocked so wondering if Swisscom should unlock it for me.
Any thoughts?

Same here.

Apps that I've tried successfully so far:

Wunder Radio
Twitter
Facebook
Collins Multi-Language Pack Pro
Guardian
FT Mobile
Michelin Europe 2010 (takes ages to load, but it did with the old OS too)
Coop@home

there was an update for BAZ this morning but the new app still doesn't work on my iPhone 3GS. It works on a friend's 3G, though. Don't know what's wrong here

Probably the first and only news article covering the iPhone 4 that is actually "fair and balanced" (no, I don't usually watch Fox news) I have read so far.

Hey all,

Iphone prices released for the UK.

499£ for the 16GB and £599 for the 32GB.

But get this. THEY ARE UNLOCKED IF BOUGHT FROM APPLE! How good is that?

I can pre order for anyone that needs an address in the UK or doesn't go back to the UK very often or at all!

Of course I would sell for the same price it costs me. I'm not looking to make money just help.

I would have them a few days after they are released on the 24th if anyone is interested.

It's about £50 more than I'm willing to spend on a phone though. I know £50 isn't much but a guy has to stop somewhere? When I bought the 3GS that was pushing my boundaries!

France are also selling unlocked iPhones. It's about £30 more than the UK one though.
Do you know if Apple will sell unlocked 4's at their retail stores? If so, do you see any reason why you can't reclaim VAT when taking them out of the country?

They are unlocked in store yes.

http://store.apple.com/uk/help/payments

'VAT refunds on exports

Apple are not permitted to refund any VAT charged on UK purchases due to local legislation restrictions. The Apple Store (UK) is not a part of the Retail Export Scheme, as this scheme does not apply to Internet Sales.'

It does say internet sales there. So I don't know what is the deal in store. I guess you'd have to call and ask.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Has anyone else been experiencing this:

Ever since I installed iOS 4, switching between EDGE and 3G has become tediously slow. The phone loses its connection to the internet every time. Sometimes the switch takes 1-2 seconds, sometimes it takes up to a minute

Nope (I'm on Orange).

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

At some point after upgrading to iOS 3, my phone started totally losing the plot when switching networks - going back to cellular data from no coverage took 10 minutes or an airplane mode toggle. I ended up figuring out that my work wifi was confusing it (we had been through some odd configurations) resetting all network settings fixed the problem and made it operate correctly at work. Never had problems before or since. Might want to try something like that?

Also, Apple Soho NY told me that electronics were not eligible for tax refund stuff. Quite possibly totally different in the UK.

Make sure you buy a cover for it. They don't like being dropped on these lovely parquet floors.

Also, just saw this - looks a big problem on the iPhone 4

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

I've dropped iPod touch/iPhone several times onto floors, hard and soft. Mostly concrete or asphalt (inc whilst running). Small scratch on the corner of the iPod where it hit, nothing on the glass. In fact, never anything on the glass. One small scratch on each front where I accidentally scraped a screw head/bunch of keys on them. I'm sure if you drop the thing so a hard corner hits directly in the centre of the glass you can do some damage - what would one expect? My last Samsung bust its display completely when someone dropped it flat onto a table from a height of an inch.

And these rumours of horrible, product-ruining, endemic problems tend to be massively overstated (not just Apple). iPhone 4 loses reception when you touch the corner and it wasn't noticed in testing or mobile signals in general are a bit flaky?

I getting pretty annoyed that many of my friends in the UK are picking up new iPhones today, but here in Switzerland we haven't even seen a date or pricing. Pah!

20min does not work (which they acknowledge and refer to an upgrade which is in the approval queue @ AAPL).
Also, Safari now crashes when I access my webmail interface (on my own server).
May be an issue with certificates, tough - but still annoying. My mailbox has hundreds of thousands of messages - I can't sync those to the iPhone. It would come to a halt.
Overall, this a very worthwhile upgrade for a phone that I've owned for almost a year now.
Once more apps "mature" to the new APIs available, it will only get better.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

So, the general consensus seems to be that it's OK to update from 3GS to 4 ?

I just don't fancy playing around with problems when my 3GS works fine for me - but I'd like to have a look at the iBooks app. To wait or not to wait?

If you let me get you one you'd have it on Monday or Tuesday at the latest and for cheaper than in Switzerland and unlocked!

Current delivery is the 14th July. But I'm not sure how long after that I'd be going back for a visit. But someone is coming this Saturday so they could have brought it for you

My cousin got two and is ebaying one for £800 odd if you are interested though?
