Any wagers that they are going to issue a recall? if so the supply to Switzerland could be put back months. Apple to hold iPhone 4 press conference this Friday

Headline says it all folks. Obviously the company is going to be getting out in front of this antenna drama (finally). We've been invited and we'll be there, presumably reporting live! It all happens source |

So unless they have already locked the pre-produced phones to the respective Swiss carriers, all the supplies are going in the (more or less likely) exchange-program for the foreseeable future. Meaning we won't be seeing any new iPhones until September here. I hope Samsung and HTC come to the rescue :-)

This will be followed by a standing ovation, organ music and several people fainting in the aisles.

My guess is more smoke and mirrors about how the signal is displayed, as per the recent press release which failed to fool anyone over the age of three.
Followed by free bumpers and a release date for the white model.

As soon as my iphone is out of signal range for any period of time the sim card locks and takes several minutes and attempts to get the sim lock off.
Sometimes I even have shut the frickin' thing down.
Does anyone else have this problem?
I would take it to the shop, but I've already had to replace self-cooked one... Give me my blackberry back! |

My betting is that apple are going to try to slime their way out of this debacle, assuming this press conference is about the iPhone 4 at all. It's not like apple to admit failure, especially since Jobs rejoined the company.
It would, however, be quite refreshing if they did come clean, admit the problems, and issue a world wide recall - not that that much of the world has the iPhone 4 at the moment.

Has to be one of the most anticipated Press Releases in a long time , I'll tip they don't recall (too costly and dent their reputation), bumpers probably the answer, but might promise something like an iPhone4 a later in the year |

Consider the damage done if apple said "hey we understand the problems you lefties are having, so here, have a free rubber band to stick round your iPhone." - nah, doesn't really cut it does it?
Recall, or nothing but a load of techno bull excuses, with the emphasis on the latter. Apple never gives anything away for free, and I reckon that includes rubber bands.

A rubber band would spoil the looks of the phone. How about a single glove, Michael Jackson style?

| | Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ Latest rumour is that there is a hardware fix in the works. This would most likely mean either a full recall or free replacement for those that want one, plus delays to those countries waiting for it to be released yet.
Whatever happens, I'm starting to get the strong feeling Switzerland won't be seeing any in July as previously thought.

The plot thickens, Apple have just released an iPhone 4.0.1 patch which apparently improves the signal bar calculation; So whats Stevie going to talk about tomorrow? iOS 4.0.1 hitting iPhones right this second (update: 3.2.1 for iPads, too)
Well it's not the full 4.1 we were expecting... but here's a little tidbit from Apple. One of the main features? The update "improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display." Interesting. We're updating some devices right now, and will report back with what we find. source |

It doesn't address the real issue with the antenna in the new model.

Apart from that: the Vatican is against using condoms. | | | | | Perhaps they are, but the Vatican know they would be foolish to question the word of Jobs.
I suspect Jobs just wants to gather all of US's tech press in a room, turn the reality distortion field up to 11, and make sure nobody leaves without fully understanding how there never was an antenna problem to begin with.
I could see a replacement program happening as well, but I'd rather not as it could affect the launch date here. Hopefully Apple have earmarked supply for the second tier countries launch. A spokesperson from a Swedish carrier said that the launch remains unaffected by all the hoopla, not that they would know.

I installed 4.01 on my 3G iPhone last night . . .
- annoying installation . . . I had to restore my phone
- on restoring, photo optimization took forever and frequently lost connection (still not finished).
- signal bars now seem to show much poorer coverage (generally lower)
- OS performance on the phone seems much snappier - a definite improvement

However nothing in the update addresses the antenna problem in the new model. I hope that's what the press conference is for today, rather than more smoke and mirrors.

BTW . . . what are everyone else's experience with photo optimisation after syncing from iPhoto?
It used to be that the photos were higher resolution and you could zoom in. Now they're lower resolution and look fuzzy when you pinch (and also don't look as good when not zoomed). |

It might be worth trying another sync, or even redownloading the update. Was your phone jailbroken? (Just a thought, don't know if that would actually make a difference).
