I'm not sure why that is but it's a pattern that's been repeating itself year after year. Last time, there were lots of 16gb phones around but only a few 32gb models. The year before it was the same for the 8gb + 16gb versions (lots of 8gb, no 16gb) etc.

Perhaps it's because the early adopters/enthusiasts/fanboys are more likely to get the top of the line model than consumers in general, therefore creating a draught in the initial weeks of sales.

once the existing stock is exhausted they are getting no more from Apple for another 6 weeks, so if you want one get it on Friday.

The Orange.ch My Account page seems to be down for "maintenance" reasons at the moment. Hopefully they're loading more hamsters onto the wheel for the midnight release

I'm assuming that all the staff at the Apple Store tomorrow will be dedicated to selling the phone. I remember when I bought the 3GS in September there were 3 people/terminals selling them and it still took nearly 2 hours to get through about 10 people.

I'd really like to be in work by nine and if it's set up similar, I think my chances are verging on anorexic.

Apparently there are already six people queueing at Bahnhofstrasse...

Are you sure? I've logged in several times over the last week. I know if I try and access at work it is perpetually down, but that's because we use IE6.

Slightly OT — and sorry if this is old news (I'm not plugging through this whole thread) — but here's an article about improving poor iOS4 performance on an old 3G. Reader comments suggest the trick works.

Thanks a lot. That really worked for me, but I needed to restart the phone for it to take effect.

I don't remember the site having performance issues like this before last year's launch, I reckon there'll be no chance later. Worth a try, but I'm not holding my breath.

I had hoped they'd have got this sorted after last year, but it doesn't look like it...

ETA: They've now replaced the "maintenance" message with a new one:

Dear customer,
Due to current major attendance on our website, our system is temporarily overloaded. Sorry for the inconvenience. We suggest that you try again later. Thank you for your understanding.
Your team Orange
