It will not be possible to keep your number anyway - they have different dialling codes.
Not true - all numbers are portable now. Moved mine from Swisscom to Orange 4 or 5 years ago, still have an 079

apart from that, it's also the fastest way to get one other than queuing in the pouring rain for 7 hours. Most people who didn't get theirs today and who ended up ordering one from their provider will get it considerably later than 3 weeks from now - if the way things are handled at the provider stores around Europe and the US is any indication. In Germany, the waiting time for a SIM-locked iPhone 4 from T-Mobile is 9 weeks at the moment.

I'm not fussed when I physically get the new phone, but my contract anniversary is July so I don't want to get tied in on the old iPhone

Can anyone get into Orange yet? Or remember their cust servs no?

Hardware fixes then?
There have been rumors that some people in the US got fixed phones (coated with a thin layer of something). However, it's been confirmed that the phones that were sold this morning still have the reception issues - at least one guy over at Macprime said that the reception in general is pretty bad and that touching the phone on the lower left corner will cause the connection to drop entirely :-/ Would have been nice if Apple had applied a fix by now.

Just got an email from Apple:

"Das iPhone ist da"

Really?

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

The rumours of a stealth hardware fix have indeed turned out to be false, but perhaps there is something to the September 30th cut-off date for the free case program?

It wouldn't be like Apple to be so arrogant not to address this problem.

This is me with my conspiracy hat on
Based on what you've said it could be that the early faulty batches are probably being diverted to us Europeans, whilst the potentially more litigious Americans get the updated ones. Its pretty unlikely Apple would face a Europe-wide class action lawsuit (ergo mass recall) but in the States its very possible and so they need to limit their liability.

Ordered one online from Orange this morning (at 6.30) - suprisingly no issues to log in but have not been able to since then. I called customer service (0800 700 700) and they confirmed that it would ship in max 5 working days.

Alternatively it looked like Globus Basel still had some at lunch, though a lot of people sitting in line.

How accurate is the Apple store in saying 3 weeks usually? Is that a guarantee within 3 weeks?

When I've ordered stuff with them before, it's meant ready to ship in 3 weeks. I've never had anything take longer than they say, several times it's been quicker. Never tried it with an iPhone though.

I guess there would be very little point wandering down to the swisscom shop tomorrow morning in the vain hope that they have any 32GB ones left?

Nah, thought not.
