Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Well well, just got an email from Orange:
Dear soon to be ex-customer [ok, I made that bit up]

The iPhone 4 was launched in Switzerland last Friday and our 'Ladies first' campaign met with overwhelming success in our Orange at Globus stores.

Unfortunately, the popularity of the campaign put a strain on our IT systems. As a result, anyone trying to renew their contract online on Friday or over the weekend may have experienced problems. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused if you have not been able to order you iPhone 4.

Work is underway to restore the 'my account' platform and to implement alternative solutions but, unfortunately, it is unlikely that the situation will improve over the next few days. We know that you are desperate to get your hands on your iPhone 4 so we suggest that you get down to your nearest Orange Center and renew your contract with one of our iPhone 4 offers. On this occasion, you can extend your contract and still take advantage of the online discount (up to CHF 200.–¹). This way you can receive your fabulous device as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your understanding.
Your Orange team

¹This promotion is only valid for online contract renewals. The discount ranges from CHF 60.– to CHF 200.–, depending on the price plan, usage and contract duration chosen, and is applied to the first bill following contract renewal.

I just ordered my iPhone 4 last night and extended my iPhone Optima 30 price plan with no issues. Also with 160 discount and 10 per month discount on the contract

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

The my offers part of the orange website is now back up and running. However I've just realized that I can't keep my Optima 100 price plan, and none of the new ones seem to include bundled minutes?

The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Watch out for Tiny white dots and dirty yellow borders on the new iPhone 4. My wife waited in the queue on the 30th for more than 4 hours and when she came back I noticed an annoying white dot on the screen. I googled this up and found that this was a dead white pixel on the screen and we were not the only one facing that. We quickly got the phone replaced with a new one next day. But please be aware of this problem. Take your time. Check your phone by opening an empty page on safari and make sure that there are no dead pixels or dirty yellow borders

I am feeling your pain right now, I also had my phone stolen 3 weeks ago, and have another 3 weeks to wait before my iphone 4 arrives from apple! Struggling to understand how I coped before the iphone, my normal phone just doesnt cut it any more! Glad its worth the wait though. Bring on 26th August!

Apropos stolen: theoretically, if you know the IMEI, it should be possible to locate the phone - worldwide.
I wonder why that does not happen more often - given that fact that it is no problem hunting down users of IP-addresses downloading movies and songs.
Swisscom even has a boilerplate answer to this question that they paste into their forum when the topic comes up...

What seems to be no problem is to block access to the mobile network in Switzerland for this specific IMEI - IIRC, you can do it right when you report the mobile as stolen.

In theory you can, but not all countries are singned up to it, and a lot of no make phones (eg cheap chinese knock off's) don't have a unique imei, so block one and you'll block them all.

you can also change a phones imei anyway if you have the right software, so it wouldn't really stop the trade.

But doesn't that mean only one of those phones can be active in one network at any given time?

Great.

Crikey, that may have actually been true when BT Cellnet used to exist...

I would think you should be able to get a used one now that the 4 is on sale. Would think there will be many advertised here and elsewhere after people upgrade. Should reduce your cost quite a bit.

There's one here 16 gig and unlocked http://www.englishforum.ch/sale-want...le-geneva.html

The 3g will be dropping in price soon when the flood of 3gs's hit the market when the baa brigade switch to the 4.

Just wondering, how the 3GS which is now Fr.629 compare to other smartphones? Are we still being asked to pay for the brand?

So all the hackers would need is unlimited physical access to your computer, and professional-grade password cracking software with GPU-acceleration.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.
