Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

I have to say the word 'facetime' makes me cringe, as does 'Retina Display'.... whats wrong with 'video calling' and 'high resolution display'??

My wife's iPhone 4 arrived last Monday. I got the chance to play with it for a couple of hours before handing it over. Here's a review by an Android user - so don't expect unbiased - it's not going to be a general rant, either, though :-)

...
Nice review, thanks for that. The only thing I'd argue is this bit:

Considering that Facetime isn't very useful in a market where you still have to pay for each and every call in general, there really aren't any features except for the gorgeously high-res screen that would seriously prompt an upgrade from an iPhone 3GS. iOS 4 (also available on the 3G + 3GS, of course) is a step forward
Facetime is only a one-time cost on the first call, after that you don't need to place a phone call.

Plus, one of the things that prompted me to upgrade from the 3GS was the better camera. Picture quality is significantly better than on the 3GS. Yes, I know other phones probably have better cameras, but when you're looking at a basic 3GS -> 4 upgrade path, it's relevant. Plus the faster processor: I find I got a lot less lag on the 4 than the 3GS.

Edit: just read some other posters who said that the initial call is not needed at all. Just choose facetime directly from the contacts list and it should work.

re- edit: found a link on the apple support forum. It is only a one time initiation:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...l_to_work.html

mhm...i do have contacts having the iphone4 but there is no indication for facetime (call). need to check how this precisely works...

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

As for some reason I'm unable to edit the review, I'll write this here:

After some research, I stand corrected: Facetime needs a cell network only for the first video call. It uses the network to send out a couple of (SMS) messages to an Apple (STUN) server, where your phone number and IMEI are stored. This happens without your knowledge and yes, Apple has your phone number afterwards (if they didn't already have that from the activation process anyway). All subsequent calls from that phone + SIM combo are handled directly over the data network and don't require a cell connection.

So if you're going abroad and plan on using Facetime, make sure you place your first call from within Switzerland or you might be charged for the activation messages.

Does this only apply to video calls, or does it also apply to plain voice calls? I ask because my brother (in London) has an iPhone 4, and I am planning to get one when my contract is up for renewal. We already use skype, but the ability to have calls automatically voiped if we both happen to have wifi coverage would be very cool indeed.

Edit: to answer my own query (after a bit of googling): http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20008289-37.html says that it's a regular voice call until you initiate facetime, at which point the voice call ends and you switch to an internet based call over your wifi. Not as cool as it could be (and I imagine the phone networks would be a bit annoyed if apple essentially took away their business by transfering calls to voip), but still better than it might have been.

iphone4 rubbish?

whaaa, I get so annoyed by my new thingy that should have been the better version of my old thingy!

Old thingy (3G) worked fine but was, eeeh, old. SO I got that beautiful new IP4 2 weeks ago.

SInce then my SIM card was not detected, it blurted NO SERVICE, while after resetting there was service. Calls get interrupted by me accidently triggering loudspeaker, face time or just end the call with my cheek.

This I could all live with, knowing it was so beautiful. But now it is silent. (And no I did not activate mute). The ringtone is the only sound I get from it. The other person I am talking to? They hear me, I do not hear them. My Ipod music: nothing.

Cannot put the SIM back in the oldie, cause it requires a mini SIM. (the IP4 that is, the 3G just requires a normal SIM)

Anyone relate? Or is it just mine?

(EDIT: see my post is moved, but this thread is named after the Iphone 3G, not 4, and can I not jus complain about it?)

The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

I have a 3g, and the voicemail has stopped working in the last week or so. I can access Combox (the phone is still on contract to Swisscom) via the key pad, listen to the menu's etc, but the phone does not divert to voicemall anymore if I'm on a call or don't pick up. I'm pretty sure I haven't de-activated it, although I can't rule it out. I haven't upgraded to OS4 if that makes a diff'.

Could any of you techy chaps let me know how I can turn it back on please;-)

Yeah, I appreciate that this is the case for "facetime", but I was wondering whether, given that you can make free video calls over a wifi connection, you could also make free voice-only calls in the same way. It seems the only way to do that is by using a 3rd party app, eg skype, or I suppose you could do a facetime call and just point the camera away.

Has anyone ordered their free iPhone 4 case, courtesy of Apple?
I ordered my free bumper from Apple - you can do it through the iTunes application on your phone directly - and received it in the mail about 3 weeks later.

Interestingly it is not just the apple ones which are free. You can also choose some of the Belkins or Griffins and some others too. Still waiting for mine...

AFAIK (still haven't been able to test it as I don't know anyone else who has an iPhone 4 :-) this is only for video calls. Just tear up a post-it and stick it in front of the cam. Or put your finger on it.

Skype is a viable alternative now that it is allowed to accept calls in the background (requiring iOS 4).

the proximity sensor problem is a well known issue. Apple has promised to fix it with iOS 4.1 but has recently postponed the fix (I guess going after the jailbreakers is higher on their priority list than fixing technical issues with their handsets).

As for the rest: if you've tried re-installing iOS and the problem persists, your phone is toast. Make an appointment at one of the official Apple Stores and get it exchanged (unless it has water-damage, in which case your warranty is gone and they'll charge you 280 Fr. for an exchange)

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Is it just me or has Apple managed to virtually screw up the launch of the iPhone 4 by not being able to provide a decent number of devices on launch day and the weeks after?

Almost everyone I know has an iPhone. Almost everyone wanted an iPhone 4. Now? Nobody wants it anymore. Some of them have been on the waiting list for a couple of weeks and have now canceled their orders. 3 of my friends have bought Android phones (2x SGS, 1x HTC Desire) since their phone provider couldn't tell them when they'd get the iPhone 4.

I hardly ever seen an iPhone 4 on the train. I'd be massively surprised if Apple got anywhere near the sales figures they got for the 3GS in Switzerland.

that really doesn't mean a thing - they have been sold out ever since 2 hours after they went on sale. They sold about 10'000 devices on the first day - since then, only a handful of customers actually received their orders.
Swisscom has delivered hardly any since launch day. Orange some, as apparently the demand for their devices isn't very high. Sunrise only got a couple thousand in the first place.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

I have a problem on my iPhone 4 . . . I'll take it to Apple, but maybe someone on here knows . . .

I can't use the debit card I was using on my iPhone 3GS and which I still use successfully on iTunes on my computer. This wasn't a huge issue as I could buy on the computer and then sync. However, the same card also fails on iBooks . . . that's only accessible on the iPhone or iPad. I can't even download free books now.

The exact message is:

"Your account has been accessed from a new computer or device, and you must verify your payment info before you can make purchases."

When I attempt to re-enter the Maestro card details approval is declined (this is a UK Maestro card, usable online and verified as working on iTunes on my computer).

Any ideas anyone?

I completely agree with this, not only did they screw it up but they also highlighted the incompetence of Orange in managing their launch. Their website was down for almost 2 weeks, and their ordering system completely collapsed e.g. I was initially sent an SMS to say my phone was being dispatched, which was impressive given that I had only placed the order a few hours prior... A week passes and no phone, so I call only to be told that it was a system error and dispatch texts to several hundred people had been sent in error

Anyway, I'm not too bothered about the delay since my 3GS is more than adequate and I'm also keeping a beady eye on launch activities for the HTC Desire HD. As soon as I get a whiff of an official release date, I'll probably cancel the iPhone 4.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Apple said I would get it in 3 weeks and I got it 2 days earlier. Everyone I know who ordered from Apple website got it right on time or earlier. So we are all happy. Most of them ordered a few days after I did (I did on the first day).

I do agree though that if you are tied to Swisscom/Orange/sunrise, then it is a bit of a frustrating wait. Frustrating enough to stick to the 3Gs or go android.

Must say though that I've been paying around with videocalls the last few days and we all love it. Love it enough to pay the premium over the 3Gs.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Apple do seem to be making the same mistakes sony made, screw all your retailers, charge a premium, strangle supply to create demand and be totally arrogant, exactly the same marketing techniques sony used with the psx1,2,3 & psp. The day will come when people don't want the iphone, ipod, ipad anymore and the retailers will only too happily stick 2 fingers up at apple.
