Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Hi all,

Have arrived in Switzerland and plan to get an IP4. I was looking at Orange - seemed to be the best value..

Would I be better ordering online and waiting 3 weeks for 16GB or 5 weeks for 32GB....or will they arrive in shops earlier?

Is it likely sunrise may have an iphone in earlier than orange?

Thanks in advance.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Got my new iPod touch on Monday, went to London on Tuesday on business, and just got home tonight.

Video called my wife (she has iphone 4) from London and saw the kids. My god I am loving this feature.

Interesting how it works - to set up, I needed to confirm my email address and apple ID, then it says something like I have registered on the apple server. Then I looked up the Mrs. from the contact list, choose facetime, and voila!

This app is only balance and transaction checking, you aren't able to transfer funds etc. . . so, reasonably safe.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

One of the annoying things about using an iPhone in Zürich is the prevalence of seemingly unlocked, but credential-demanding wifi networks. If I walk around with wifi turned on, I find that the iPhone thinks it has a connection, but actually when you launch Safari you can see that it can just get to a landing page. As annoyance-icing, these networks often have misleading names like 'FreePublicWifi'.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Some of these are not even real networks - they are laptops that are broadcasting an SSID they've seen before as ad hoc (for example, read here http://erratasec.blogspot.com/2007/0...ifi-virus.html). Although you are right that it is annoying how many "free" wifi spots are actually a bit awkward to use. You shouldn't be hassled by them if you make the iPhone forget them and not offer to join by default.

You're right. I should do this. But there are SO many of them and I lost patience . . .

BTW . . . does anyone produce a map of actually free wifi networks in Zürich/Switzerland?

I would be wary because anyone can create a free wifi hotspot and then start snooping on your data packets whilst you surf.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Is it smarter to wait until I'm in Switzerland -- I'm in NYC right now -- to buy my iPhone? Probably a dumb question, I know. But I seem to be having a "dumb question" day today.

Also, will the Residence Permit I get -- B or L -- drastically affect my ability to get things like cell phones? I heard yes, but I'm still not sure.

Download this app it tells you the location of the nearest free Wifi and shows you the results on a map, it uses location services to see where you are in the world.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Now iPhoneless. Got pickpocketed in the St Petersburg metro.
Kind of curious, I had my laptop with me so I was able to go online and suspend my account. However, I've not heard one word from Orange customer service about this. You'd think they'd try to get in touch with me via email at least.

I can't remember which network you are on, but Swisscom has an app called hotspot@ch which shows their hotspots and where they are in relation to you.

Don't buy it in the States - the phones sold there are all locked to AT&T. While they can probably be unlocked by you using some hacking tool, you'll lose the warranty on the device. AT&T doesn't unlock iPhones.

You can purchase the phone directly unlocked from Apple.ch
It should be less of an issue for your to get a contract on an immigrant's permit if you don't want a phone to go with it.

Have you tried using Boingo (can download the app from itunes) - you pay $8 a month (or maybe 8.95CHF) and most of these open --> splash page wifi-spots are usable without entering any credentials on the website. Have been using it for a few months on my iPad now and am very happy with the service. On their website, they have a map view of where all their compatible wifi-spots are - but that doesn't cover them all, as i have used boingo in many unlisted locations successfully -

Good advice - very few people know that service in Switzerland but it's probably the cheapest way to get access to a gigantic number of hotspots here (including the ones on the trains, all Swisscom hotspots, Monzoon etc.). Been using the service for about 2 years now

I'm on Orange.

I thought with Swisscom, using their wifi ate into your data quota anyway?

Thanks.

It's not the lack of good free hotspots I'm worried about though, it's the prevalence of bad, apparently free, useless ones. As it is, I don't go over my monthly data quota on my iPhone, so I simply turn of wifi wand use 3G.

Re: The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

Apple claims that the shell and the screen of the 4 is scratch resistant and tougher than the 3GS. So would that mean I don't need a cover or pouch.
People already using it must have a practical take on this. Please suggest!
