Seems like more people went with Swisscom than Orange. Counter-intuitive to me as their offers seemed inferior.
Is it representative of their market-shares in general?
yes, I guess - they have 5 Million+ customers, orange about 1.2 million

Free Push-Email for the iPhone (no Mobile Me needed)

if you have an iPhone 3G (or a V1 with FW 2.0) you might want to try this:

mail2web.com offers free activesync / exchange accounts. The service can be found here: live.mail2web.com

Simply add mail2web.com as an ActiveSync Account to your iPhone and forward your provider's email to your new @mail2web.com address. From there, everything gets pushed to your iPhone.

ActiveSync uses very little data volume (10-20mb for thousands of e-mails) - there's really no reason not to use it. The battery life doesn't take a major hit with this either. As the iPhone's connected to the internet all the time anyway, the couple of kb per hour of push traffic hardly makes a difference.

http://blog.mail2web.com/2008/06/fre...dar-and-notes/

peter

ps: I'm not affiliated with mail2web.com in any way - but I've been using this service for years and am quite happy with it

How does Gmail work on the iPhone? Does it stay connected to the IMAP box or fetch every few minutes?

Does it work with Google apps?

The iPhone doesn't do IMAP idle - so GMail is only polled every 15 minutes

1 Million? 890'000 of which in the US, the rest in the place of the world Steve Jobs calls the "3rd world": Europe. Not that they couldn't have sold more here - Apple just doesn't give a rat's arse about Europe and allocated 89% of the phones to the US...

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Until yesterday, iPint was my favorite app... but I have to give it up to Shazam too. It does some kind of audio fingerprinting to identify songs, which honestly I find as useful as the iPint, but it's somehow... cool.

The Facebook app is about the only non-Apple software I use with regularity, though. What about the rest of you?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I ordered 2 iPhones yesterday from Swisscom, anyone have any inside info on how long the next batch will take to get to Switzerland? I am expecting a long wait.

I went into the Swisscom shop in the airport on Friday and they said if you wanted a 16Gb white iphone you may only have to wait 2 weeks but for a 16GB black one then it could be a month or so - so have ordered one white and one black and I'll have the first one that arrives, hubby can wait a bit longer for his

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Love the iPhone but the battery is disappointing. It's 17.46 and I'm already on red. OK, I was on the phone for about a total of 15 minutes and listened to a podcast for 30 minutes. Kinda sucks.

I will not turn off 3G, Wi-Fi and Location Services to see how that works. I read that having 3G on (which I don't think changes the quality of a phone call) doubles the battery life.

Also read somewhere that when you are in an app, press the home button for 4-8 seconds to stop the app running in the background (and hence killing more of the battery).

Two weeks? nah.... i got an official swisscom answer (i wrote to the CEO Mr Schloter on last friday evening, got the answer on saturday evening) and here's what the answer said:

"... unfortunately we have received only a fraction of our orders placed for the iphone. We were only able to serve a very small number of reservations and customers.

I will make shure, that you can get an Iphone out of the next delivery next week. We will contact you next week in order to clear the necessary details.

kind regards

Carsten Schloter"

Good Communication team, they answered within 24 hours... don't you think?

still ... i'm ****ed off to have to wait, after having booked my phone long ago and queued 2 hours on friday early morning.

regards,
k

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hi,

I am assuming that most of the people who are complaining about the battery power probably haven't used a 3G phone before. I really like my phone ....not an iphone and unlikely ever to be one...but I really hate the fact that I always have to remember to a mini usb cable with me in case it needs to be recharged.

http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/07/thoughts-on-the.html

http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3353 is a great article showing the real world battery life of the 3G iphone.

Not a big surprise...unless you have never used a 3G smartphone before.

Have fun

Martin

Orange is telling people who are ordering now that it's going to be a 3-month wait :-(
