Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

My initial thoughts on the iPhone:

The good
  • The AGPS works really well and is very fast, this is certainly a useful app.
  • The screen is beautiful
  • The phone works
  • The camera is better than expected, it actually takes a half decent picture.
  • Wifi support is excellent, no messing around
  • The ipod is OK.
  • ipint
The bad
  • No flash, I have only today realised what a big deal this is
  • The tilty control thing works well but it can be quite slow for the phone to rotate the landscape mode
  • The keyboard is going to take a lot of getting used to. I hate it
  • Slide to unlock is crap
Other thoughts
  • People who expect this to appear in the work place are having a laugh, it looks nice and is fun but in terms of productivity it's behind RIM and Palm. The dependence on itunes is crippling.
  • I'm happy with the phone and it does everything reasonably well, those moving from a Treo will not be wowed by it in the same way others are.

Thanks Peachy. The flash thing is a constant source of rumours (example) so who knows?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

you have to get used to the keyboard, after a couple of days you will find it much more useable (at least, most people do).

I havent yet really noticed any shortcomings with no flash, with my 1st gen iphone. I must be missing something. Why is it such a big deal?

Haha, slide to unlock is cool.

I have been in Switzerland for 5 days now so I definitely don't have this country down yet. In the US when a new product comes out (i.e. Wii, iPhone, Xbox, etc) folks line up outside stores every AM and when the doors open they are the first ones to have a chance to grab what came in on the truck the night before or that morning. Does it work the same way here? I already have a Verizon Blackberry World Phone but would like a local number and the ability to take pictures and upload online a I walk the streets of Europe. What is the best option available to grab any size of an iPhone from Swisscom in the next weeks to month?
Yep, people are more reserved here, I was expecting month long delays on the Wiis and the PS3, but walked into empty shops on launch day and picked them up from their ample stocks.

The only trouble I had with the iPhone is my contract, luckily launch day fever has passed me and I think I can wait a month or two.

Does any Orange customer know how to find out your total data usage?

Under MyAccount it insists that I have all 2048 kb left , which doesn't make a lot of sense since I have been using UMTS and I have 1 gb per month.

Thanks for the reviews Peachy,
Could you indicate how long it takes to get a satellite fix from the moment you whip it out and start up the app? Also from the youtube vids it seems to refresh quite quickly when you're in a fast moving vehicle, but does it update your position as well when you're just walking. There is usually a +/- 10 meter error so you could walk 10M and there would be no update in your position. Some GPS devices get around this by using error correction algorithms and averaging but I know my N95 doesn't

Cheers

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

My friend reserved an iPhone on 4 July (the first day one could reserve at Swisscom) and still does not have a phone. They just skipped him over. He is in the process of fighting with them. Did manage to get a year free (at least the fixed monthly costs).

I am still hoping to upgrade from 8 to 16 just for the story.

I agree with our American contributor, while "reservations" work in theory, they do not seem to work in practice. Let's line the up in the AM!

As far as the features, the GPS is OK but lags a bit (as compared to my HTC Touch Cruise with Tomtom). Also, without the third party app for turn by turn directions and route correction if you wander off the proposed path, iPhone GPS is pretty useless.

I believe that's mainly an issue with Google Maps, if you ask me. I, too, think that without a decent GPS app, the feature is useless.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

So hear my own little short review:

Pros:

- Very easy to use device despite its many features

- Beautiful, brilliant screen, perfect for everything. Well readable in sun-light (well, better than others I've seen). With eReader it looks better than a book to me - I love reading on it.

- 3G is very fast and Safari works like a charm now. Slow page-loading in Safari was my main complaint with the 1st gen iPhone. Still no flash, though.

- The iPhone's very quickly becoming the internet industry's little darling. All major websites and companies seem to be embracing it and are producing client software and optimized websites for the iPhone, making it even more enjoyable to browse the web with it.

- Visual Voicemail is a very cool feature - and I'm actually going to use it since it's free on Swisscom (unless you roam)

- Great multimedia-integration, perfect music player, perfect video-player, great for reading.

- Push E-Mail, calendaring etc. works very well and has been very reliable. I tried both ActiveSync and Mobile Me - both work perfectly. Push e-mail with EDGE doesn't seem to influence battery life a lot but in combination with 3G it's a total battery killer - no idea why there's a difference but it really is there

- excellent VPN integration - got my work-place VPN working in less than 5 minutes

Cons:

- Battery life sucks, especially if you need 3G and Push E-Mail on at the same time; won't last through the day and since you can't have a backup battery for it, you're screwed if you can't charge it at work.

- Keyboard - I've had an iPhone for over a year now and on the 3G the keyboard is still crappy. As long as you don't have to type in German, it's halfway usable as the English autocorrection is pretty good. The German dictionary they ship with it is a disgrace - it's full of mistakes (some words are totally scrambled in there) and it tends to correct all vocals into Umlauts (Stunde -> stünde, oder -> öder etc. REALLY annoying)

- Push E-Mail only comes with one single e-mail address - adding additional accounts like on Blackberry BIS doesn't work.

- Stability of the 2.0 Firmware could be better. Also, Apple doesn't seem to be doing much stability testing for the apps they're selling on the App Store - many of those crash all the time.

- App-Store: lots of tools but the really useful ones (like VoIP clients for 3G or any application that keeps on running in the background) are banned because Apple needs to brown-nose the carriers. If you want to use these, you need to unlock. Also, not all applications are available in the Swiss store - most notably those provided by google and by ebay. not nice.

- E-Mail client is visually attractive but somewhat limited in function (no way to change the "From:" address, for example

Verdict:

I love the phone. It's so much more pleasont to use than a Blackberry. Most of the negative points are software-related and will hopefully be fixed by Apple in the future. I don't see a single point in which any of the competition would be significantly better with the big exception of the keyboard. If at least you could use it in landscape mode to type e-mails...

A sidenote:

Don't get the "Grande" plan on Swisscom. I thought I'd easily crack the 1gb but turns out I don't. I've used it extensively for almost a week now and I've only used up 60mb of data so far. That translates into about 250mb per month if I keep up the usage (which I won't, normal usage for me is much less) so Liberty Mezzo would have been enough by far. But no worries there - in 23 months and 3 weeks I'll be able to change the price-plan accordingly :-)

My wife's on the Piccolo plan - while it's probably enough for her, I'd say the 100mb aren't enough for most people who browse regularly.

It's about 10-15 seconds, but I guess this is using the radio masts since I'm indoors. Stil does the job though.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

i know this is in wrong area but i was just on the phone to sunrise to cancel my contract as now getting an iphone on swisscom and it seems we have been a little stupid! or naive!

We saw that it said notice period 2 months and thought ok no probs we can pay minimal contract for 2 months - but it seems that they are sneaky and if we don't inform them 2 months before the end of each 12 months from date of purchase that we want to end the contract they automatically renew for us for another 12 months! how nice of them! I had assumed that we were out of contract in Apr 07 as we signed up in Apr 06 and didn't assume any problem - has this happened to others? I assume this is just normal practice over here? I am amazed that they are allowed to do this and automatically decide for us to renew our subscription and then hold us to it

very disgruntled

Yes this is in the normal Sunrise term and conditions that you signed when you first purchased the phone:

http://www.sunrise.ch/en/agb.pdf

Quote:
Contracts with a fixed duration can be terminated with two (2) months notice prior to the end of the
fixed duration. If no termination notice is given for a contract with a fixed duration, the term of the contract shall be tacitly renewed
by further periods of one (1) year.
Sunrise have a tighter contract than both Orange and Swisscom IMHO, but it is not uncommon (Heath Insurance for example)

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

the annoying thing is though is that you are expected to know 2 months before your 12 months is up if you want to change providers or not, what happens if we were leaving switzerland which is why I wanted to cancel but i can;t cancel now until Feb next year? it just doesn't seem normal to me?

Doesn't Swisscom let you cancel the contract within 2 weeks? Maybe you can try to negotiate your way down to the Mezzo plan.
