Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Does anyone know if you're tied to using the Swiss iTunes/iPhone App Store with Swisscom phones? I already have a US iTunes account so I'm wondering if I'll be able to access the US App Store. Of course, I have to wait until my contract is up in Nov to even GET an iPhone...

What happens if you login in iTunes using your US account? Do you still see the Swiss iTunes store or the US one?

Almost certainly.

The same will apply when RIM bring out something better.

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't just solder on a bigger memory chip. These things are usually modular and so companies start springing up around the time of first warranty expiries to provide just such a service.

So hear my own little short review:

- Battery life sucks, especially if you need 3G and Push E-Mail on at the same time; won't last through the day and since you can't have a backup battery for it, you're screwed if you can't charge it at work.

.
You cannot have a backup battery? Why?

Because the whole unit is sealed and the battery non-replaceable. However you can have a seperate power pack that plugs into the dock connector. I've got a generic battery power pack which charges any USB device using its original cable. I use it for my GPS/PSP and Ipod and it works perfectly giving me 2-3X longer battery life when I'm out and about. I think I picked it up from a 1 pound shop in London.

Quite similar, except mine accepts 4 AA batteries. The common theme is the dummy USB port which provides the +5Vdc

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

So I went today to the Orange store in Basel, on the Freiestrasse. I told the guy there I've made a reservation a week ago and I asked him when do they get new iPhones. He asked me if I was a new customer, I said I was and then he told me on a low voice that he has 8GB iPhones in store

I then told him that I want a 16GB one and asked when they get them and he told me he doesn't know. Sneaky *******, he was trying to sell the 8GB one

So to everybody who's a new customer to Orange and wants a 8GB iPhone: go to the Orange shop on Freiestrasse in Basel!

Would he take an order though? I'm happy to wait for a 16GB model, I just want to book my place in the queue.

Well, I reserved a 16GB last Thursday (in the same store BTW), so today I didn't even try to place another order.

if your apple id is for the US store, you can use that one - no problem.

I actually received a call from Swisscom yesterday, letting me know the 8gb phone I had allegedly reserved was ready to be picked up. When I told him that I already have an iPhone and that my reservation was for the 16gb version, not the 8gb he asked me if I didn't want another 8gb! They're not getting rid of the 8gb - everyone wants a 16gb. Anyway - I cancelled my reservation - so if you want an 8gb chances are Basel Freie Strasse (Swisscom) has some.

today I got a letter from Swisscom in which they apologized to me that my phone still isn't ready (I HAVE ONE...) - they'll contact me as soon as it arrives :-) so they're still in total chaos.

Our iPhones arrived today, I'm amazed really as I had expected to wait a few weeks and assumed we would be waiting a few weeks seeing as we didn't order until Sunday - but am very excited

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

right, iTunes.

I have never had the misfortune to use this dire application before I moved to the darkside that is Apple vendor lock-in.

The missus laptop is a few years old, P2000 mobile, 512mb of Ram perfectly respectable laptop but iTunes crawls. I have about 120gb to add to the library from a NAS, I expect it to take some time but what on god earth is it doing? It frequently hangs and is going to take about 8 hours to import it, then even longer to find cover art (which it can't for most of my music anyway) THEN it's calculating gaps or something. What on satan's arse does this mean? I don't want it to do this.

So I get some music on it finally and want to drag my selection over to my iPhone but it has a cross and I can't do it, it wants to sync the lot and then tells me after several minutes it can't because I haven't got enough space on the iPhone (yeah, it took you 15 minutes to work that out iTunes you friggin' genius). When I do finally get some music on my iPhone half of the tracks play, but with no sound.

I don't really want to jailbreak my iPhone because I need my phone for work and don't want to make it unreliable or have update problems but what are my options?

Steve Jobs should be burnt at the stake for inflicting this pathetic application on us.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hmm... I'm tempted to say 'get a Mac' since I've heard from several quarters that itunes is not the same smooth and easy experience on a PC, but that won't help you at all

Firstly, you're uploading 120Gb all at once and wondering why it is taking a while? It sounds as though you have asked a lot of a (relatively) old machine.
Secondly, it is an intensive process and my 3yr old Powerbook with lots of ram would struggle, so your PC with 512mb would probably struggle with any 120Gb transfer, itunes or not.
Thirdly and probably most helpfully, there are features in itunes which can help you, most significantly the ability to manually sync your music - you decide what tunes you upload to your ipod. I have about 60Gb of music on my PB and the biggest ipod I have is 30Gb. I have created a playlist which goes on the ipod, the rest is for home listening (or until I think another ipod can be justified ). You can also switch cover art off so it won't go looking in the first place. I've never done it, but you can manually manage the gaps (inbetween tracks), not sure if you can switch that off too...?

The apple lock-in thing works OK if you are totally apple, but you're right, it can be a royal pain in the ar$e if you haven't sold your soul...

Ummm ... use a decent computer? I mean, come on, 512 MB of RAM? What do you expect?

Well considering I know that online banking applications use less than this I would not expect an application that has to index and move a load of files to suffer a problem.

My laptop never uses less than about 400mb memory and has no problem indexing exactly the same folder.

The laptop in question runs fine, and when I used Adobe photo something or other to index thousands of photo's on the same NAS (including generating thumbnails) and it only took minutes.

My conclusion is that iTunes is complete crap but I will of course follow Robban's suggestions to see if I can improve it.
