Steve Jobs should be burnt at the stake for inflicting this pathetic application on us.
i think itunes is perfectly fine. works great for me.

120gb is a lot of data for an old laptop to move on a point and click.

can it be a problem caused by the fact that you need to authorise the computer or something? itunes does not let you move music from computer to computer without authorisation, in my experience.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

ok heres a question i do not have an answer to....

if i want to update my 1.1.4 firmware on my 1st gen unlocked iphone to 2.0 firmware....

can this currently be done using pwnage? or do i have to wait for a new version of pwnage (note that i only want to use pwnage rather than jailbreak).

Pwnage will, at the moment, only jailbreak the phone but it's unable to unlock it at this time. The moment you install 2.0 on your phone, it gets re-locked. I read that the new SIM-lock is a lot tougher than the old one and that it'll be a while until you can update. Ziphone won't unlock it either, AFAIK.

I'd say it's only a matter of days until the unlock becomes available, though

....I've heard from several quarters that itunes is not the same smooth and easy experience on a PC...
I can confirm this, I use a couple of Macs and a PC at home. iTunes is great on the Macs and absolutely hateful on the PC. Likewise Quicktime and Safari.

Going in the other direction, I also find Office for Mac to be a pretty soul-destroying experience...

Congrats, hope you enjoy them. I'd also be interested to compare notes - are they from Orange, and are you a new customer?

Full ACK here. Office for Mac is SLOW, buggy and all in all pretty unusable. Thank god OpenOffice.org is now available for Intel Macs - Beta 3 is very usable; the final version will be available in October

Also, once you've used them for a couple of days, please write a short review - I'm especially interested in hearing how Orange's 3G coverage is.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I just got my new 16GB from Orange!! after more than an hour of the registration process, i was given the phone, and they told me that i can activate it myself at home.

I just opened it, and the first thing i saw was the silver paint on one of the buttons slightly scraped off , tiny but noticeable .... i still have not switched the phone on, neither have i removed the cover on the front and back of the phone. normally, i would go back and ask them to replace it, but if i do so i'm afraid that i will have to wait another couple of days until i get a new piece, isnt it? the small defect will certainly make me unhappy.... i guess i'll go and get it replaced anyway.

After having used an Option UMTS stick from Orange for about half a year, I decided to go with Swisscom for the iPhone. Orange's network really isn't great. They cover quite a large area but unfortunately good signal strength can only be obtained outside - inside buildings it sucks.

Sure, Orange has cheaper subscriptions with 1gb of traffic included - but it's easy for them to include that much traffic if their network doesn't allow for large amounts of data to be transfered everywhere.

This is very interesting.

Do you already have the iPhone on Swisscom and how does it compare to Orange?

I would like to hear from others on their experiences with the data network of each carrier.

I would personally go with Swisscom without a second thought if it meant having better signal...

I'm sure Orange will improve, and considering it's going to take me months to get used to typing on this thing I can wait.

As an Orange customer though, go with Swisscom.

Well considering I know that online banking applications use less than this I would not expect an application that has to index and move a load of files to suffer a problem.

My laptop never uses less than about 400mb memory and has no problem indexing exactly the same folder.

The laptop in question runs fine, and when I used Adobe photo something or other to index thousands of photo's on the same NAS (including generating thumbnails) and it only took minutes.

My conclusion is that iTunes is complete crap but I will of course follow Robban's suggestions to see if I can improve it.
Make sure you uncheck the option called "consolidate library" (I think), which basically copies everything you import into iTunes' own convoluted file structure.
You can also disable the automatic artwork downloading, and do it later by right clicking on any selection in your library.

iTunes is quite good in a lot of ways, and stable in my experience, but very inflexible.

The danger you run if you do not consolidate is a library with lots of broken links, since they point to a file that was once on a USB stick, external HD, torrent folder etc..

Yes, that's annoying when iTunes adds anything you play to your library, whether it's from your web browser's Internet cache or a USB stick. It still is to prefer to iTunes' non-human readable file structure IMO.

peachy presumably keeps his music fairly well organized and in one place if he's storing it on a NAS, though.

Yeah, but as you said in a previous post, do you really really need 1 GB? In the beginning I thought I did, but now, I don't know what to think anymore. It was a no-brainer for me to go with Orange, now I don't know what to do
