Last time I checked (and that might have been too long ago) there were no iPhone shortages in the States...
You have to look very hard indeed to find an iphone in the States, and I am still waiting for mine

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

This thread is soooooo last week - Can we start a new thread, please?

"...Apple's chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer revealed that the company will make a key "product transition" that cuts back on its profit margins to help shut out rivals.

...the mystery transition will drop Apple's gross margins from 34.8 percent in the spring quarter to just 31.5 percent in the July-to-September window in which the update takes place, ultimately settling at about 30 percent during Apple's fiscal 2009.

Oppenheimer is deliberately short on details, not wanting to pre-announce the product or allude to its nature, but explains that cost will be a driving factor.

Yes, call it "The Apple unreleased, unknown, unconfirmed product speculation thread"

I think they'll be keen to make sure Linux doesn't doesn't fill the void MS have created with Vista and my bet is they'll release a low cost EeePC rival and just completely saturate the market, they can then begin hard core vendor lock-in.

Edit: I'll start it, could be an interesting thread thinking about it.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I have just successfully jailbroken my 3g iPhone using the windows "manual" method.

Comments if you are going to try this
  • You might brick it
  • Switch the phone OFF before placing in DFU mode
  • If you recieve "error 1601" disconnect from USB, remove sim, hold down power and home until the apple logo appears

It was scary, I will have a beer now.

Anybody else Jailbroken their phones? I'm considering doing this just for one application - offline wikipedia for the iphone. The sum of all human knowledge in your pocket. Ok, it takes up 2.2gb but a small price to pay.

With this version can you restore the iphone after jailbreaking it? In case apple updates the software and the updated software bricks my phone.

That could very well be the killer app for the iPhone. The only minor issue is that its a 9 month old snapshot of the database.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Well, I don't know about "sum of human knowledge" (many cases like this leave it at the "useful tool" level for me: http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion...dia-edit_x.htm). However, it would be a pretty fun app.

I'm not sure I'd bother with it though. I've found that even using it heavily, the automatic switching to known 802.11 networks has caused me to use FAR less bandwidth than I anticipated. So as long as I'm in Switzerland, I'm perfectly content to access the online version.

Still, for people with limited data plans, or perhaps those that travel to poor coverage areas or internationally, it might be a really exciting app.

I have restored my iPhone (yes all my old data - app store apps which i needed to re-install).

I think that to revert to Apple software you would re-install iTunes, set the phone to DFU mode then do a restore. It should download the Apple flasher and away you go. I haven't tested this though.

I've noticed Rsync is in the repositories for the Cydia package installer. This is cool as I should be able to ditch itunes to sync my music, just need to work out how to update the db when i want to copy music across.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I live in Geneva with the iPhone 3G on the Swisscom network. Work on rue du Rhone and live near the UN. For some reason in the last few days the signal is reverting to Orange France. I took the phone off the Automatic setting (Settings, Carrier) but I should not have to do this.

Anyone having the same problem?

Personally I think the white one looks stupid when the front still is black. The colour does however conceal smudges and scratches effectively.

You can play with my 16gb black next time I see you

White just sems a bit tacky and its obvious what the white thing you hold up to your ear is. Which is fine if you want to show it off.

You also get another 50 fr. off if you exchange a working phone (but the sim card costs 40 fr. on top of these prices anyway).

I'd go for white then, i have a white one and hubby has black and his shows more smudges and scratches - from the front both phone look identicle.

I'd recommend getting a screen protector though for the front I've got one of these

and can hardly tell its on

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Does anyone have any information about the Iphone's (8GB version) availability in Swisscom stores?
I heard that the Iphones were all sold out in Switzerland. Isn't there any Swisscom store that still does have 8GB Iphones in stock?
I also heard Swisscom takes Iphone reservations. If you reserve one, how much time would you usually have to wait to get an Iphone?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

The shortage seems to be with the Black 16Gb version not the White-16Gb or the 8Gb. Anyhow, I talked with a Swisscom rep about 2 weeks ago, he mentioned that in two weeks (probably starting from next monday) they were expecting iPhones shipments on a weekly basis, so in theory no more iPhones shortage

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

i would choose white personally, but since i just unlocked my 2g iphone to the 2.0 software, im pretty happy. shazam is an incredible app, so is the remote control for itunes, and also bloomberg... plus of course the lightsaber one is a guilty pleasure haha.

offline wiki is interesting. will be more interesting when a 32gb iphone is available, and thats when i will be jumping in.

krlock3.
