Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

It has been some days since the first iPhone 3G has been sold to clever, happy people here in CH.

I don't want to follow the Joneses, but I am itching for a new toy.

Questions:
1. Is it worth that 619chf (prepaid price swisscom)?
Or should I get a 24month contract with 3G connections.

2. Is the iPhone stable? (meaning the OS)
Any crashes? Installing apps? Bricking or jailbreaking?

3. Are there any big disappointments and so on?
Connection speeds, internet surfing, limitations?

4. Can you convince me that I should get one (although it is just a toy for me)?

Thanks in advance.

HAT

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

the iphone has an incredibly high approval rating from its users.

phone is stable and any bugs will be ironed out by software updates, not like other phone manufacturers.

you will be very happy with the iphone.... what are you waiting for?

if you are a swisscom customer, why not take the piccolo contract... chf 25 per month including 100mb.

no i do not work for swisscom or apple.

krlock3.

p.s. You say it is just a toy for you. if you buy one and come back here in a month, i can virtually guarantee, you will say that your current phone is the toy, not the iphone.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

does any body else get annoyed with the ending phonecall feature on the iphone? I keep pressing the home button to end a call but it doesn't end it - you have to tap the screan, this is so far my only main gripe - I am worried I am not going to hang up on a call properly and the person on the other end will still be listening!

Actually i lie its not my ony gripe, another bug bear is that I can't send MMS's - I can only send photos taken on my phone via email and not text message - unless I am missing something?

Otherwise still enjoying playing with my new gadget

you can also end a call by clicking on the microphone, if you are using the headphones at the time.

I got mine with a contract - if you already have a contract with a good data plan the prepaid package is for you.

The OS could be more stable - it's not like I'm getting frequent crashes like on the Palm Treo or some Nokia phones but some 3rd party apps have crashed the phone. Doesn't happen frequently enough to annoy me. Also, firmware 2.1 will be out in a couple of weeks.

The biggest disappointment I've seen so far is the battery life. If you use push-e-mail, the battery will only last a day. If you watch some videos, play some games and place some calls together with push, the battery will be empty by noon. If you add 3G to the game, it won't last you more than 3 hours of active usage.
I personally have resorted to disabling push when I'm at home and disabling 3G when there's WiFi available and now it safely lasts the whole day.

Anyway - generally speaking I'm happier with it than with any other phone or PDA I've ever had - and I've had a few

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

is this so different on the iphone 3g?

i have everything enabled on my 2g iphone and never had to worry about battery life so far. are you sure your phone is normal? i have push email on mine (received 3 mails today), wifi always enabled, i watched 25 mins of video in the morning (best of youtube free podcast... i can recommend it!) and have also been farting around with the bloomberg and remote control app before i left home.

when i check my battery indicator (at 4.41pm) it says full.

???

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I went to the Swisscom store today and I was just about to sign for a new iPhone 3G 8GB contract but during my discussion with shop assistant came the following issue:

The iPhone is simlocked to the Swisscom simcard and cannot be used with another simcard in other country unless unlocked. This is apparently unique feature of iPhone but not any other cell phones purchased on contract. I am a kin user of Nokia products and when I travel I usually switch between South African and Polish simcards.

The shop assistant could not answer my question whether it is possible to unlock (or it is just their policy because they represent Swisscom). Anyway, I put my order on hold until tomorrow and would like to reach for opinion of other iPhone users. Is it only case of Swisscom or any other phone provider has similar policy?

BTW: Sorry if there is similar answer in one of 19 pages but I wasn't able to read thru all of them

yes it is - and yes, my iPhone is completely normal. My wife's iPhone shows the same battery life. Just head over to macrumors.com and read some of the forum entries - some people only get a couple of hours out of their iPhone 3Gs. Unless you disable 3G and/or push e-mail, you won't get much more than a day out of it.

Swisscom only sells to Swiss residents for the time being.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I got my iPhone 3G 8GB yesterday. I started using basic applications, but from what I know, in order to be able to download the songs, I need to connect to iTune. I browsed thru apple applications and found iTune progrm to be installed on PC an apparently it opeartes like iPOD program to transfer the songs. I did it but cannot synch or upload mp3 to my iPhone from my laptop. Any take on it?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I have a relative currently in Crans-Montana in Switzerland. I looked a little bit at some maps and as far as I can tell the closest Swisscom shop is at Sierre (Av. du Général-Guisan 38). Is that correct?

Does anybody here by any chance know anything about this shop in Sierre? Does it have 8GB Iphones in stock?

thanks

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

From my first impression iPhone is smooth and easy to navigate. The GPS system works ok here in Europe and one can define the routes to selected destination. Unfortunately when I wanted to select navigation e.g. between Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa it couldn't find the orutes although the Google maps search can go anywhere? Do I need to download extra set of maps for another continent? Or is it possible?

It more or less comes down to usage in my experience. Standby does not seem to drain the battery at all, while 3G and WiFi eats away at the green bar after just a few minutes.

I have to charge it daily on average, and that is with push e-mail turned off but with using it to listen to audio constantly throughout the day. I would have to work really hard to deplete it completely in one day so I'm not concerned.

I have push email on all day (well actually I don't, I pull gmail), i play about with it plenty and browse the web too and from work whilst listening to music (1 hour). I still have 50-70% battery left at the end of the day.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Bear in mind, tests have shown that it has among the best battery life of comparable devices. If I run 3G and wifi on my TYTN II the battery doesn't last the distance and I can do half the things on my HTC than I will be able to on my iphone, if it ever comes

certainly my experience with battery life on 2g iphone has been absolutely a good one, but if the experience here is that the 3g is really not good enough, then it might put me off upgrading. however, i have the feeling that the 3g should be similar to my 2g. certainly Steve Jobs said that it should be, when he announced the 3g.
