Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

The problems with Orange are unfortunate since the annoying looooong backup times allegedly have been fixed with this firmware update.

Now I'm not sure whether to update or not when I get home.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Reportedly, the 2.0.1 firmware also makes the pwnage-tool unusable and breaks the unlocks that were released just two days ago. The upgraded baseband will probably delay the unlock by another couple of weeks.

Yeah this you made vehemently clear since second one. Please stop harking on about the joys of Swisscom, otherwise I'll start banging on about Orange all the time. Which have been great for me, I get great 3G reception everywhere, even 2 bars in the basement that I work on Klybeckstrasse (the troll that I am).

Also - the long back up time is easily solved by various suggestions here

Sorry, sometimes I get carried away a bit by this - Orange really pi***d me off before I canceled my subscription with them.

As for the long backup times: nothing really worked for me - but the 2.0.1 fw seems to fix the issue. I guess iTunes was just doing a full backup every time instead of doing incremental ones.

Interesting idea re Crash Reports slowing down the backup progress due to Apple's servers being overloaded. Has anybody come across any evidence to support this?

Not really, took just as long with or without this, so I just turned off the backups altogether.

The servers being overloaded may have been true in the first few days but I don't think this is an issue now.

That's what I was thinking as well, and was also playing with the idea of turning off backups altogether.

Hopefully I can try all this out first hand soon, as I finally picked my phone up from the post office this morning on the way to work. It's now sitting in the car waiting to be set up when I get home...it's going to be a long day...

For stock info: Mine was delivered yesterday by post and I ordered online on July 10th, though it arrived without a sim card so it is now a very shiny electronic brick until Or**ge send me what was supposed to be in the box in the first place

Bugger, mine is from Orange as well, I haven't yet checked to see if the SIM is in there.... are you a new customer to Orange or were you changing an existing contract?

Hey Polorise, you wanna go for lunch again? I could show you my new phone

Seriously, if I put my UK Orange sim card into my brick, will I at least be able to start playing with it while waiting for the swiss one to come?

(I hope this is helpful more generally...) I was an Orange customer in the UK since about the day they opened for business, latterly a heavy user. I moved here in Feb and got a prepay to tide me over until The Day Of The Resurrection, so I had no swiss Orange account. This makes me a completely new customer to Orange despite the fact I bought my first Orange phone before the sales assistant in the Lausanne shop was born

One annoying thing about Or**ge is that the e-shop and the physical shops are treated as two totally separate entities. I asked if the nice young man in the shop would give me a SIM card there and then... I may as well have bought my brick from the donkey feed merchant in Lhasa

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I've just opened the box I got this morning to check as well, and surprise surprise, no SIM.

This is becoming ludicrous, I'm starting to wonder why the hell I bothered. Next time it's going to be a nice simple N95, bought from a provider with some level of organised processes, and in a standard bricks and mortar shop.

I've never exercised as much patience as I have over this product, but I fear that is quickly coming to an end

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Ed, you were previously an orangeclick user, correct? Did you transfer your old number to the new iPhone abo or did you get a new number?

I ask while I didn't have to change to a new SIM card when transferring. Did you at any point provide them with the unique number of your current SIM card?

Worst case scenario, you should be able to use the iPhone with your old SIM as long as it is Orange. Just stay off cell network data usage.

Hi there, I think you might be mixing me up with someone else! I'm a brand new customer to Orange, starting a contract from scratch. That's why I'd assumed the SIM would be with the phone, as I'm not transferring anything from anywhere else.

They sure know how to make a good impression on new customers...

Hope so - I collected the phone from the post office this morning, so don't know if the SIM might be waiting for me at home - I'd already left before the post arrived.

By the way - did you have to sign for your SIM pack, or will they just leave it in the letter box? I'm never at home when the post arrives, so if I have to sign for it, it'll mean another trip to the PO tomorrow...
