Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I have a photo as my wallpaper on the 'slide to unlock' screen. Is there any way I can see it more often? Can I set that screen as a sort of screensaver so whenever I pick the phone up, the photo will be showing instead of the homepage with all the icons?

If you have a jailbroken iPhone (hacked & open to third applications other than those downloaded through iTunes' Application Store) there are some programs that allow you to customise your phone as you please. SummerBoard is the best example, although hasn't been released for 2.0 as yet, so you might have to use WinterBoard instead and use available themes to customise your phone.

This allows you a high level of customisation including the one you mentioned. You can even change the name of your carrier (i.e Swisscom or Orange) and write any name there (not that this is of any use).

I guess that all of the above will make little sense for those of you who haven't hacked your iPhones. Apologies in advance. ;-)

Thanks, but I have a standard 3G thing. Though after my verbal diarrhoea on the subject I am astounded you didn't know that

I assumed so but just wanted to give you a flavour of what is available on the "dark" side :-)

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Idle pondering....I assume that at the end of the 12/24 month contract with Orange / Swisscom, the device itself is yours to keep. So to switch to another provider you would just get a new contract and SIM with them but keep the same device....

...I know this is correct, but there's a dark portion of my brain trying to tell me you have to give the handset back....that's ridiculous - right?

Ed, that's ridiculous

There's been lots of talk about unlocking a phone at the end of a contract - I believe the French providers are obliged to do this, many others offer it for a fee etc. At the end of my 12 months I will get to keep my toy but it will still be locked to Orange so I presume I will have to get a different Orange SIM, unless the 3G has been unlocked by then (quite likely!).

Thanks, I needed the forum equivalent of a wet flannel in the face to shake me out of that one

How come your phone will still be locked to Orange at the end of 12 months - couldn't you just let the contract run out and then switch to Swisscom if you wanted?

The phone will remain locked until unlocked.
I believe it is usually common practice by the carriers to charge for the privilege of having your device liberated.

Interesting - even after the end of the contract then?

Yes. Previously I have unlocked phones either by using a programme which may be floating about the internet or else paying the provider £20 / CHF40ish for the privilege of being able to freely use something that I own. My iphone will only work with an Orange SIM until the phone is SIM-unlocked and currently that is not an option, given that all 3G phones will be under contract for at least another 11 months. Maybe nearer the time the option of unlocking will be available, but of course the providers won't exactly be rushing to tell you about it!

Good info, thanks guys. I've been mainly on work contracts before so have never had to think about this...

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Have any Orange customers used any of the 100 included minutes of public WiFi that comes with the Abo? Is it the same as their "Hotspot Office" service?
To use that service, you're supposed to send a text containing "wlan" to the number 5005 to get a login/pass. I tried it but haven't gotten anything so far.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Has anyone here in Switzerland had the problems with the iPhone G3 dropping calls and users having problems with inconsistent cellular connections with their new phones. Many forums are talking about this including ...
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=542751
and also...
http://discussions.apple.com/thread....32695&tstart=0

I was just wondering if many people here in Switzerland are having these problems as well? The forum at apple is so long with so many people having connection problems using the G3 that it seems to be avery serious problem not only in the USA.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I wouldn't worry about it. This is the Internet, if someone has a problem with something and finds 10 other people that share it, then it suddenly is a widespread issue.

The iPhone is a cellphone like any other, and it will run out of battery and it will lose reception.

no dropped calls so far. I just find it annoying that the iPhone will display a "loss of signal" message every time it switches from 3G to GSM and vice versa.

The only issue I noticed (perhaps 3 times since I bought the phone) is the phone's dropping the data connection when switching from GSM to 3G. Enabling and disabling airplane mode will fix the issue.

Interesting reading. Apparently the poor 3G reception is a worldwide issue and possibly hardware based.

I can honestly say that I don't have poor 3G reception. It's not great at home but it wasn't better with my TyTN II - the loss of signal strength at home is caused by the winter garden's metal framing.

I get 5 bars in my office and even had 2 bars of reception while working in the server room, 2 levels below ground today :-)

The reason for the apparent world-wide 3G signal strength issue is the fact that most 3G networks world-wide simply suck. Building 3G networks requires a crapload of antennas and covering a wide area is much harder than with GSM.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I've just placed my reservation for a 16G iphone at the Orange centre in Greifengasse (Basel). The expected lead time is 3-4 weeks , can I place multiple reservations in other Orange shops to see which one gets it first?

P.S I can only get mine from the Orange shop since I want to port my number from an Orangeclick pre-pay account.
