according to p.4, Orange has 16 E-GSM channels, but thats a very small amount

they got some more in 2007 but I have no idea how many they need for decent coverage

There seems to be a study going on to nail down the iPhone 3G network performance issues. Here is the link

This link is only useful for giving some average bit-rates in an area, and doesn't really reflect iPhone performance issues.

Actually the phone itsself is "dumb" as the network gives the phone all the instructions what to do (ie: when to handover from 2G<>3G or to a different cell, etc.) Alot of people blame the phone, because they don't know and can't see whats going on on the network side.

True, some phones have better performance than others, but really only the network operator can see these kind of statistics, since they can filter the dropped calls by phone type. As a user, when your phone drops a call or has other connection issues, you really can't tell if its the phone or the network (...well, unless you have an LG, then I'd say its safe to blame the phone ;-).

Have any Orange customers used any of the 100 included minutes of public WiFi that comes with the Abo? Is it the same as their "Hotspot Office" service?
To use that service, you're supposed to send a text containing "wlan" to the number 5005 to get a login/pass. I tried it but haven't gotten anything so far.
This worked for me, tried it this morning.

Just tried getting a login/pass again and didn't get anything.

Did you send what I posted earlier, just "wlan" to the number 5005?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

My initial thoughts on the iPhone 3G

iPhone jail broken and upgraded to 2.0.1
Desktop PC running Win XP

No Outlook sync of tasks or notes
No syncing of Firefox bookmarks (just IE and Safari)
3G reception isn’t great compared to my Nokia N95
The inbuilt Maps app is pretty rubbish. It has no info on the GPS chip output (e.g. signal strength, no of satellites etc..), however my biggest bugbear is that it doesn’t cache maps to memory, it has to download on the fly. That’s fine in Switzerland with virtually unlimited data contracts but prohibitively expensive when roaming abroad (when you’re most likely to need GPS)

Other than that I love it and I’m hoping that the huge user base will translate into some serious GPS apps and work-arounds for the Outlook sync issues.

I got the text an hour later or so. Do you know if the password is meant to be temporary and expires?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Has anyone taken out an insurance policy on their iPhone? I guess I'm partly covered for loss and theft by my 3rd party and home and contents insurance from Vaudoise, but I'm missing dedicated coverage and like for like replacement e.g. similar to Orangecare (UK)

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Came across an interesting photo retouching / editing app for iPhone today - picoli (iTunes link). Given the limitations of the camera this might prove handy.

I've not tested it myself yet, but a Google search shows some positive first impressions.

this forum needs a proper icon to indicate smugness.
