It's the way the iTunes store works. It's exactly the same for buying songs or videos as well.

Do you mean on the iPhone? Settings -> General -> International.

Or Settings-> General -> Keyboards -> International Keyboards.

Depends on what you mean.

Don't know what they mean by "international keyboard", when setting it to Swedish, I still don't get the late three letters in the alphabet readily available on the keyboard. Instead I'm still left with the painfully slow "press and wait" routine to type å, ä and ö. Given that there's no physical keyboard, I'd have expected more.

Still, it's a nice gadget - for instance I'm using it to type this.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hadn't noticed that. But then again, I haven't really used the swedish keyboard layout yet.

I guess the setting is more for the predictive text input then. Perhaps you can type an "a" instead of "å" and/or "ä", and it will automatically print the right word for you?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

am i the only one who thinks the iphone stinks?
well, how can i switch off that annoying auto-complete
when writing sms, when im writing in general?
the word-suggestions are totally crap, i am writing
like im illiterate.

why isnt there any delivery status for sms?

please, is there a way to change that in the settings?
is there one of those "wonderful apps" to get it sorted?

thats enough crap for me to bring the phone back!!!

is there a chance setting an mp3 as a ringtone?

Do you mean the developer chooses which store the app is sold in? Didn't know that. But then again, I'm not a developer by any stretch.

Stinks? No. Do I think that there are things it could do better? Definitely.
However it has the international settings you were looking for.

You can also set mp3s as ringtones, yes.

Switching off auto-complete - no, but you can make it learn: see here, although I agree that's not ideal. What language are you using where the suggestions are "totally crap"?

If you want to take it back - go for it. There will be plenty of people happy to get yours. In fact if you do, let me know. I have three team members still waiting for theirs to be delivered. (EDITED to add: not that I'm condoning any kind of black market trading, but I'm sure a legitimate transaction could be worked out )

Assuming your iPhone has been jailbroken, go into Cydia installer > choose iClarified sources and then install that little app called Disable Auto-Correction (2.0.1).

That'll fix it

Jail breaking your iphone liberates it from a lot of the artificial constraints imposed by apple. However the process is not that straight-forward and there is an inherent risk of bricking your phone.

Therefore if all you plan to do is disable auto-complete, I'd suggest you avoid the jail break route and wait for something a little more official e.g. a utility from the Apple App store.

Cheers

Unfortunately, it also "liberates" it from any kind of warranty Apple and/or your phone provider might have offered.

As for the auto-complete issue: I fully agree with the original poster. While I think the English dictionary is alright, the German one is insanely mistake-ridden.

There are so many incorrect words in the German dictionary it seriously raises the question whether Apple pulled the word list from Chinese babelfish. It also has the stupid tendency to turn every vowel into an Umlaut: "oder" becomes "öder", "zahlst" becomes "zählst", "Stunde" becomes "stünde", "fahre" becomes "Fähre" and then there are things like "alle" becoming "älle" which is completely idiotic.

They should do two things:

1. offer the customer the ability to disable auto-complete
2. finally buy a decent German dictionary.

I type about 3 times more slowly in German than in English on the iPhone, although German is my mother tongue.

Agree. Yesterday "hättest" became "hätttest" and I could find no way of forcing it to accept my version. I can't understand why it can't be turned off either.

EDIT: Just seen a posting on macprime.ch, software upgrade has been released, 2.0.2, but doesn't appear to have corrected the umlaut issue, according to them

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

another prob actually is, that on my keyboard there is no "umlaut". i always have to type "ue", "ae" etc. but the auto-correction comes up with "ü".

unfortunately i cant get any mp3s on my phone! plugged to my mac, installed itunes 7.7, installed iphone sw-update...but drag n drop or any import of music was/is impossible!!

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

The iPhone has been out in Germany for almost a year, so don't expect a quick fix for the dictionary issues. It's quite bizarre, I have to say.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Firmware version 2.0.2 has just been released (update using iTunes), reports of improved 3G reception and menu speed have been mixed

P.S. For those of us on jailbroken versions of 2.0.x, we'll need to wait for the next installment of pwnage before updating

Hard to believe. You just need to find the way. You have quite a bit of original music which you have ripped to your mac, that will definitely be fine. If you have downloaded tunes, there should also be a way. Songs downloaded into limewire automatically go into the itunes playlist for example.
