Has anyone else noticed that the weather app is showing Caribbean-like conditions for Basel City?

You need to pick Basel, Weil am Rhein for the true weather.

Glad you got it sorted in the end.

Now it's up and running could I gently suggest again that you have a look at the manual and / or support pages linked to earlier - I'll bet you find loads of stuff that the phone can do that you might have otherwise thought it couldn't.

EDIT: For example if you play music through your computer at home, now you've got an iTunes account check out the free Remote app in the iTunes App store - you can get there from the front screen on your phone, or through iTunes on your computer. The app allows you to remote control iTunes from your phone, if you have a WiFi network at home - can be very handy.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

did that already, but thanks. nice app!

one serious issue i have is: why does my PC not connect to my iphone via bluetooth and the other way around? why, for example, does the fon not connect to swisscom internet but wants to log in at the zurich hb wireless lan so that i do have to restart the fon? is ist the case that surfing the inet with the return to the main menu.. that my inet connection closes down? is there a chance getting an app/plug in letting me know about the delivery status of an sms?

1. Sorry, no idea about Bluetooth, I don't use it, I'm sure someone here can help though. You switch it on and off through Settings -> Bluetooth.

2. Networks - you can control this through (guess what...) Settings -> Wi-Fi and Settings -> General -> Network.

3. Best way to find an app is through Google or search using the built-in search in the iTunes store. You said you had trouble with this before by searching for "change language options". You'll get better results if you restrict yourself to fewer search words, e.g. in this case I would just search for "SMS" or "text message" (or even just "text") and have a scroll through what comes back.

Seriously - spend some time playing with and therefore learning your phone: you'll get a lot further doing that in the same time it takes to write a post on here.

And with regards to the process voiding your warranty, all you need to do is restore back to a non-jailbroken version and all traces will be erased.
The thing is - if you need your warranty, chances are your iPhone is broken. Restoring your original firmware on a broken iPhone might be a problem, depending on the defect.

Its not a serious issue, it simply isnt a function of the iphone. Apple do not want to transfer data via bluetooth at that point. Maybe that will change, probably not. At the moment, the bluetooth functionality is used to pair with bluetooth wireless headphone(s) if you wish to use them. Are you going to rant about it?

No idea what you are talking about with regards to the internet. Basically the phone works like this... if you use internet functionality, it will first try to use an approved wifi area (this is intelligent as it assumes you would rather use the internet for free than pay for it using a data service). An approved wifi area would for example be your wifi setup at home.

If it cannot find one of those, it will sometimes ask if it should log onto another wifi network that it has found. At the HB, this might be the semi-free wifi network you are talking about. If you approve its use, the iphone will assume that you always want to use that network (even though it is fairly useless because it is only free for a couple of sites and general internet usage is blocked unless you pay for it).

When there is no approved wifi network available, the iphone will revert to 3g. When there is no 3g it will attempt to use EDGE (I assume, im not 100pc sure about that).

When none of that is available, it will fire lasers into space and bounce them off the moon and pick up a secret network underneath a dormant hawaiian volcano top secret apple facility (see Manual, page 27). Or it might not.

Your final question, there is no plugin showing delivery status of an sms. Apple trusts that once you have sent an SMS, it will be delivered.

Please do what Ed suggests and think a little more carefully before your next "This iphone is rubbish because it does not iron my socks" type statements.

oh, i am over that point. the major prob was as you have seen that i did not know that i had to set up an account for itunes. there was no indication i have to do it, as you get always license agreements there was none telling me that. maybe you say this is obvious clear...i was not used to that and i did not see why it is different with an ipod and iphone.

and when i am at the HB, i cant read the manual, there is no printed one, i couldnt even get a inet connection (without shutting down the fon) n i thought heres the expert thread.

the sms delivery is simply not meant for me to be assured it went through but if the receiver has received the message. because it drives me nuts if i have to wait for an reply and i cant say: is it because the fon is switched off or why else i get no reply?
so dont be bothered if in the end i stress you when being mad while waiting

though i like the simple drag n drop from apple/OSX very much, it is very different that i cant drop pictures from my hard drive at a contact entry but again (tell me if im wrong) do have to make an file with lets say profile flicks and i have to synch them onto my phone and connect them with my contact data base, one by one. i thought the bluetooth feature enables me to transfer pictures onto my fon. it doesnt, ok.

in general i think it is not so nice to be bound to the itunes system. no other fon has set up a similar way to exchange data over a certain interface/software. and the bluetooth feature is nice to have when you want to transfer music or pics from one fone to another. were talking about an 1000chf expensive smart fon and some features the simple nokia crap has. i mean...its ok, it has a reason, what ever... i am just wondering, im not judging the fon to be crap (anymore). thats it, its my opinion and this is like about an asshole: everybodys got one.

It's called e-mail. I'm sure this is why the iPhone doesn't have MMS either, is because e-mail is easier and cheaper way to transfer this data.

And I'm sure it won't be long before an app that uses the much faster wifi will be able to do this

And regarding this and your other queries - a simple google search or bit of research could have told you about these 'missing' features, so take the phone back or quit bitching.

But that is exactly the point. I can visualise you perfectly at the HB....

flow is walking through the HB, when he thinks oh lets check something on the internet. He presses internet... five seconds later he doesnt have what he wants.... "AHHH what is this cr*p, why dont i have internet, phone must be broken"... flow keeps bashing at buttons on his iphone, "Ahhh what is happening here, this shouldnt work like that, aahhhh!!!!". "I must shut down the phone immediately!"

Instead, pay attention to how you think the phone should work. Be a bit more patient and try to figure it out instead of losing it too quickly.

Next time you are walking through the HB, bring your old Nokia and try n check a website!

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

the point is, that i tried to solve being lead to the swisscom hotspot. i went into the settings, clicked n switched something, but it did not work.
i simply have no idea what the settings do. i dont know what i should do?
if im in the settings menu, it says wifi. ok. i dont want to use any wifi (here swisscom p-lan something)but 3g, the connection i am paying for with my contract. maybe this intelligent functionality, but i want to chose first what network i want to use.

i tried to change the carrier, the wifi settings...whatever possible to click n change...there is this mark indicating you use HB hotspot, but i couldnt de-connect, saying use 3g or edge or whatever.

i try to fix it while thinking about it first. but my abilities are very limited when it comes to technical things. maybe you guys have read all press articles, all developer statements etc., but this iphone/techstuff aint my hobby, i am a consumer, a user. when i read in here that a frozen, bricked fon is easy to fix because of this n that software base...respectfully i have to shake my head. so you have a different approach then i have, all intuitive etc.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I'm with flow23 on this one,
the phone has many good features but certain things don't add up for people who are used to dealing with different device philosophies.

Bluetooth only being able to handle synchronisation and headset functionalities is a pain in the ass. The reason is obvious - force people to use iTunes as the PC interface to the phone. No SMS-receipts sucks, not being able to turn off enterprise email is a major pain in the ass and battery drain - got the damm thing peeping all bloody night. No horizontal editing in emails and notes is bloody annoying. Otherwise it has some very smart and intelligent features - I only bought it because it is cheaper than a smartphone and iPod but now I love it.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I'm not saying - in fact, I don't think anybody is saying - that the device is not without its limitations. There are some things it doesn't do well - others it doesn't do it all.

However there is a world of difference between that and - as flow is doing - simply dismissing it out of hand because you can't be bothered to do a bit of basic research.

You don't have to be a techie, you don't even have to be interested in it, you just have to RTFM. Or watch the nice video on the website. Or read a forum. In this respect, the iPhone is exactly the same as it's competitors.
