| | Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ | Quote: | | | | | The thing is - if you need your warranty, chances are your iPhone is broken. Restoring your original firmware on a broken iPhone might be a problem, depending on the defect.
peter | | | | | Its a risk/benefit decision you need to take. However if the device was truly FUBAR then its unlikely that the 3rd party repair centre would go through a forensic examination of the ROM chip to see if you may have flashed the firmware. Most other problems that are likely to occur e.g. buttons not working, no sound, screen not working etc.. would have little bearing on entering into DFU mode and reflashing it back to its original state.

Anyway - as you said - it's a risk/benefit decision. Right now I really don't see that many benefits. Are there any compelling reasons to jailbreak it?
I'm aware that not many people managed to download Netshare on time - I did, though - so tethering isn't an issue for me. Truphone works great for VoIP abroad and for getting my docs on the iPhone without too much of a hassle I'd have to use something like FileMagnet anyway.
I should say that I used to have a jailbroken 1st gen iPhone and there's really nothing I miss right now my jailed 3G.

| | iPhone 3G - where to get one in Zurich?
a friend of mine wants to buy an iPhone 3G (8gb) - does anyone happen to know where that would be available in Zurich? I'm aware that the Swisscom shops are the worst place to start looking (waiting lists of 1000+ people...)

Can anyone please tell me how to get the voicemail button working on an Orange 3G iphone. Pressing and holding button #1 doesn't work either so I have to dial my own number to get into VM.
Please don't tell me its related to having a jailbroken phone |

I guess I could just use my own number and that would go through to VM, but not sure how that would be billed |

Edit: I'm taking that back - I'm really not sure what you'd have to enter here. When programming a forward to my voicemail, I always enter 086 079 xxx xx xx - was the same for Orange as well. The question here is, whether you need to enter the 086 again or not.

A quick google solves the problem - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2086 | Quote: | | | | To configure iPhone sold in Switzerland to automatically dial voicemail, tap Phone and dial the following alphanumeric string.
**5005*VM*voicemailnumber#
For example, if your mobile phone number is 0123456789, then your voicemail number would be 0860123456789, and you would dial from the keypad **5005*86*0860123456789#
You only need to do this once. iPhone will remember this number, even if you turn off iPhone.
To confirm the stored voicemail number, dial *#5005*VM#.
Now each time you tap Voicemail or press and hold 1, iPhone will dial your voice mail | | | | | |

I got mine yesterday. Ordered it on line at Swisscom little over a week ago. Was a bit confused how to activate the thing, but once I downloaded iTunes, and signed over my credit card to Mr. Jobs, then the phone was good to go.
Great experience so far. Everything works. UI is the best I have ever used. Battery life is "good enough", a full charge lasted me a bit over 30 hours with heavy use, and everything turned on. Great gadget.
