The thing on the headphone cable that functions as a microphone and a clicker for playing/pausing/advancing track and taking/ending calls.

Et tu, Nicky?
I just got plain normal headphones with mine, they didn't have a button on or anything? maybe I need to hunt them out and check again...

it does however do a backup each time I plug my phone into my mac, my ipod never did a backup, so I am assuming it doesn't just simply update the newly added songs as per the ipod - still though its not a time consuming job when i do plug in and sync

Nicky
That's a backup - it's backing up the data (such as apps) from your iPhone onto your computer, so that it's there if your phone crashes. That's a different operation to syncing music or contacts or whatever.

In basic terms, syncing is comparing what your iPhone's got to what your computer's got, and changing the iPhone stuff to match the computer stuff.

I understand that more or less but was wondering if the backing up was what was bugging flow as its something ipods don't do and he's been comparing the iPhone functionality with the iPods functionality

Anyway as a mac user for over 15 years I still think anything with a little apple logo on it is 100 times more intuitive to use than any other computer accessory gadget PC etc.... just wish the actual 'phone' function on the iphone was a bit better

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Yes, it seems that certain things about the iphone arent as intuitive for all of us as they naturally seem to myself.

However, many of the issues here could VERY easily be solved if you RTFM.

Maybe RTFM is not an intuitive concept either. Lets take a moment and look at that.

If there was a large manual which designed expressly for the purpose of describing what RTFM meant on every page, which was given personally to flow23 by the head of RTFM AG at a special presentation dinner, where flow23 has to go up on a small podium and give a thank you speech, I can only assume that he wouldnt RTFM but would post on here about how the manual doesnt explain what it means. Because it is so incredibly.... painfully.... obvious that you havent!

As I know flow23 to be a creative and intelligent guy, who is just a tad impatient on these matters, can I suggest that he actually actually actually does R T F M which means make yourself a cup of coffee, close your brain to all the wondrous and creative things that impose themselves on your attention on a minute by minute basis, and R. T. F. M.

Then it is more unlikely that you will, as you told me the other day that you did, try and figure out how to remove the microphone on the headphones because you didnt know what it was.

.....

Dont misunderstand me, there are issues with the iphone and its obvious that with such a product there are bound to be lots of questions, which I am always willing to answer..... for anyone. Even you flow! Just look at how helpful Ed has been and if you look at your responses, to be honest they are disrespectful!

Now to give you a bit more help, Apple recently updated the firmware of the iphone. You may have noticed that when you plugged your iphone into the computer recently it prompted you by telling you that new firmware is available (its firmware 2.02 btw). If you download and install this (on itunes on the iphone tab look for a place where it says check for updates if it doesnt prompt you again). The new firmware will make syncing a bit quicker.

This is true, it is about time that apple offered a decent set of headphones at least as an option, although the microphone clicker design is very nice IMHO.

Haha flow!
I'm flabbergasted you didn't know about the mic-clicker after having it for weeks now.

You've outdone yourself this time, bravo! I don't think you'll top this.
for weeks? do you suffer from dementia or do i?

by the way: ever considered that there might be a gap from all your explenations in english to german pc and iphone interface, from understanding? do i remember this right that some iphone english mothertongue xperts e.g. cant guess the right synonyms for the feature on a german phone being the same, position-wise in the settings menu? so this was or is a different thing too, translating, setting theory into praxis for me.
ok, i did not RTFM but the answers in here and still it went wrong. (of course connected to my short temper, silly)
i never had any probs with an apple system and being used to the way a cellphone works, i found the iphone somewhat special, different. anyway...i apologize and say thank you for the help ( and i mean it) finally all is said and done.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

How about Read The Frucking Manual That Isn't Supplied, Through Apple Arrogance ? Maybe that's an acronym that is not so easy to swallow and regurgitate.

If I bought a washing machine, is the onus on me to work out how to use it ? Should I guess ? I don't think so. Product liability laws mean that if adequate instruction must be supplied. Even the provision of documentation may not be sufficient if it is not of adequate quality and comprehensive.

RTFM has its uses to berate lazy people, but it shouldn't be used mask bad engineering practice.

Or even better do what Nokia does with its N-series phones. They bundle a 2-piece remote and earphone set which allows you to ditch the crappy Nokia earphones and use some decent Shures

I also agree re the headphones. Until I got the iPhone I always used third-party earbuds with iPods, and it's only the handy mic that's stopping me from doing it this time.

I haven't looked yet to see if any third-party companies are making earbuds with the mic, but if they're not and Apple aren't blocking them, I imagine it'll only be a matter of time...

they are available now in various places in zurich and cost about chf 89

Agreed too, but I happen to believe, as would most who have read since flow appeared on the scene circa page 28, that it is more a case of the former.

Boy have I not missed this thread. I think a new one needs to be added for discussion so that the already bloated FAQ isn't clogged up any further.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

To be honest, I haven't read every posting on this thread, as it seems too long and pretty dull. The iphone seems unworthy of such adoration. Its pretty good, a bit quirky on some basic phone functions that they really should have got right, but it functions ok as a small wireless web browser.

I will replace it without hesitation or regret as soon as I can get a similar browsing device with a larger screen from any quality manufacturer.

I use these head phones.

http://www.griffintechnology.com/pro...tunebudsmobile

The mic/clicker works well but isn't as cool as the original. Sound quality is ok, not great, but they're quite cheap.

Interesting...

New BlackBerry suffering same 3G connection drops as iPhone

Mine seems to take a while to get going again when moving from 3G to 2G or back.
