Not impressed

Dear All

recently I had the opportunity to test the iPhone 3G at my company (being in the IT dept has its perks) and compare it to BB. I was excited at first but only after a couple of hours of playing with it I was sooooo disapointed.

Before I even agreed to test the device, I was considering to get one of my own. However, after testing it for 3 days I believe this is a device for teenage girls and boys. Why you might ask? well it is good only for viewing pics, watching YouTube, pics viewing (not taking). Typing on the touch keyboard is ok if we are talking a few SMS etc. Try using it like a BB and you will smash it against a wall in no time. It sucks extremely bad!!

This device can never replace a BB or a Widnows Mobilke device type of keyboard. Execs are never going to adapt it.

Our firm considered to switch to the iPhone in order to save costs which are associated with BB licensing/plans etc. The plan is to look at Windows Mobile 6 devices with QUERTY keyboards

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I had some troubles with the keypad at first, but its getting quicker, fast. I don't linger on each key so long, and after finding out about the fantastic magnifying glass tool, I worry less about making mistakes, it's simple to just go back and correct it.

I've not had any dropped calls yet. One of my friends did something to it which required a hard reset, unfortunately I don't know what that was.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

glad to hear it worked out for you...however I still do not see this as suitable replacement for heavy BB users...ok for viewing of stuff...not for typing while on plane, train, walking....

Whilst I agree that this is not yet a viable alternative to a Blackberry for heavy business users, to categorise it as being therefore only suitable for teenagers is short-sighted, and I'm afraid to say slightly snobbish.

I am a 30-something bloke in a well-paid job who has been permanently employed since graduating from university at 22 - certainly no teenager (although to be 18 again would be fun). I use the iPhone in my private life as a phone, iPod, for sending texts and email, and using the internet (including YouTube, although maybe in your view I shouldn't admit to that).

As far as I'm concerned none of these activities are restricted to just teenagers, and I enjoy using the iPhone more than any other phone I've used.

I'm not blind to its shortcomings and have talked about them on this thread, and I certainly agree it is not yet a fully-fledged business tool. However to denigrate it, and by extension its users, to the teenager segment is simply patronising.

Re: Not impressed

Ok then sorry Dawiz, I was harsh in my assessment. I think I have just read one too many "oh the iphone is **** it should have had cut and paste from the beginning, apple need to pull their finger out" type comments. Those who understand why that annoys me will basically understand what im about. Those that dont, wont.

Anyhow, i guess people have mixed experiences with the phone. I personally wouldnt want to use any other phone, even if i was paid to do so.

Sutter - I think it's difficult to agree on any Apple product. Some love it, some hate it, just because it's Apple.

The iphone may be the right phone for some, and not the right phone for others. So unless you define and post "your" cell phone mission statement, it will be hard to match it against the iphone's abilities / features to determine whether it's a good fit or not.

A poll won't help much IMHO.

I think it will be hard not to like the phone for normal average day personal use - I think maybe as a business user its not for some people, my husband has a blackberry for work and an iphone for personal but spends a lot of time playing with apps on his iPhone where as his blackberry is for boring business use, the iphone is more for recreational use and he enjoys it more. I have an iphone and love it, I find the phone a bit annoying due to it being very easy to dial someone by mistake but I have learnt my lesson with that and am more careful with it. I love the fact that I can check my emails on the go, browse the web (and for you Sutter being a forum addict you can get your fix of EF 24/7 no matter where you are ) its easy to browse the forum and reply to threads via the phone. Its great for taking quick pictures while you are out and emailing them to people although the lack of MMS is a bit rubbish and the lack of video is a downside also. It does sometimes crash but when I say crash i mean i open an app and it quits out of the app but doesn't crash the phone, this takes seconds and basically means the programme quits and you are back at the main screen.

As with most gadgets there is room for improvement, I don't think any gadget/phone will be perfect and satisfy everyones needs so i think its unrealistic expecting this to be the 'perfect' device but its certainly good fun.

Hope this helps!
Nicky

It sounds like you need to borrow one from a friend for a day or hop into a store that has one and play with it for a while. I write a lot of SMS messages and bought a Samsung with a foll keyboard for that purpose, and I love it. Has wireless Interweb, too, so when home or at McD or Starbucks I can log onto Gmail and get my mails. The iphone is definitely sexy, but I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money ... maybe if my iPod or cell phone both crap out at the same time ...

The texting (and self-correcting) takes a little getting used to but I've found now that I am, it's quite easy.
Why don't you go to a Swisscom store and give it a try?

I text a lot and i think its fine for texting (this was a concern of mine when i got it but the keyboard is surprisingly easy to use) and also now that both me and my hubby have one we have saved a fortune on our bills as we now email each other for free rather than text each other

I find it better than texting on a keypad, and I was never one to use txt spk. It's also got a nice feature that keeps a screen of the conversations in little text bubbles, so you don't forget what you were talking about.

I struggled with the built in dictionary at first, but that seems to be working much better now.

have you been at swisscom shops n checked the models they have and what they cost? none i liked was under 150CHF. so no other choice but taking the iphone-> 199CHF. i only have the 8gb model, its far enough space as i had the ipod touch 8gb and back then like now have only 2gb used.

texting is ok, t9-autocorrection is very good. but sometimes its not. like you can write e.g. "fortvbui" and it comes out the word "forever" which you actually wanted to write. but i end my texts always with the first charcter of my surname which is an A and always the fon writes ab...ad...af. dunno why its never gonna learn this?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

its an example of misstyping. i mean its not happening you push these letters while you want to type forever but i couldnt be very precise about the absurd character combination and the iphone making the forever word instead.
