| | Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ | Quote: | | | | | I've read all 44 pages --- thanx everyone - most interesting read, and only took 2.5hrs.
I got my 3G in the first week they were available in CH (yeah, one of the lucky ones) and as this is my first ever experience of Apple, I am most impressed. I like everything (other than the battery life, but I've learned to live with that). I particularly like the speed that Safari has. I only have two points/questions and I am pretty convinced they have not been covered yet in all these 44 pages ...
1. Every so often my 3G will 'freeze' on me and I can't get it to 'un-freeze' apart from pushing all the buttons furiously and then I get a nice black screen with a silver apple logo. After a few minutes this disappears and the devise 'un-freezes'. Is this called a hard reset and does anybody know why this ('freeze') is happening?
2. My iTunes account is Swiss and does not (yet) host the video and TV stores. Does anybody know if iTunes CH will allow access at any time?
Thanx. | | | | | Day before yesterday I browsed on the web and my screen freezed displaying nothing. Next day I went down to Swisscom shop in Baden and they advised me to do a hard reset i.e. home button and reset button pressed simultaneously for few seconds. The iPhone goes off for about a minute or so until it goes back on again. Alternatively, I was told, you can do it via iTunes but I havent tried it yet.

Also - landscape email would be nice!

1. press the button on top and the circular button on the face together for 5 seconds... this causes a reset. make sure you have the latest firmware by updating it in itunes... generally speaking the latest firmware should cause the least crashes or freezes.
2. good question. i guess switzerland is a pretty small market for apple so maybe its not a priority for them. | Quote: | | | | | I've read all 44 pages --- thanx everyone - most interesting read, and only took 2.5hrs.

Thanx. | | | | | I would guess there may be licensing issues to overcome here. It was some time before the UK got this after the US for that reason...

However, if you have a look at what they sell in the German store, I have to say I'll pass. It's only old stuff and most of it is German-only. I highly doubt they'd be very successful with the kind of content they're offering in the German store - most Swiss aren't very fond of the German TV channels anymore (RTL, Pro7, Sat1 - don't know anyone who still watches that crap).
Gladly, media downloads are legal in Switzerland :-)

peter | | | | | It's maybe a discussion for a different place, but did I understand rightly that downloads (for personal use) are legal but uploading isn't. Or did I just make that up...?!

Unfortunately, most p2p tools will automatically make available anything you download, which essentially makes them illegal to use. But then there's rapidshare ;-)

peter | | | | | There is an easy workaround to get a US/UK iTunes account without the need of an US/UK address and/or credit card but I think this has been mentioned before here...
Cheers,

Dear All;
I haven't been reading the thread for a while as I am trying to juggle too many things at the moment; including steering my young enterprise clear of the financial crisis. so apologies upfront if this has been already solved...
Anyway, I was one of the early adopters of the iPhone, and purchased a hacked US iPhone 2G (if that makes sense) back in November last year. I have been following the cat and mouse game of actualisations but, to be honest, I am not using any of the non-iTunes applications (or could live without them). My question is; now that the iPhone is also sold here in Switzerland, can I just update my iPhone through iTunes or would this cause a problem? (I guess I am just being both lazy and pragmatic - no time at the moment).
Second question. I had a normal (non iPhone) phone contract with Swisscom and I also had the 200 Hotspot Wireless hours per month option that I use as my solely work internet connection. After talking to Swisscom, I updated my iPhone contract to iPhone Piccolo but realised that when using the Hotspot connection (from my Laptop) that "eats" on my iPhone wireless credit (100 MB). I have called Swisscom and they gave me all sorts of answers so have changed my phone contract at least 4 times in the last month. Any help there? Is it possible to have an iPhone contract and the 200 hours option or are there incompatible? (Sorry if I am confusing you)
Thank you in advance; |

Thank you in advance; | | | | | To answer the first question, I believe you can update a jailbroken iPhone to the latest software without problems, it will simply (and obviously) no longer be jailbroken. However, I have not done this myself so cannot guarantee it. The other point is would you want to? I notice 2.2 has just been jailbroken in the last day or so.
No idea on the second question, sorry.
Have you any more info about getting a UK/US iTunes account without a credit card or address from either of those places?

These three sites provide the step by step instructions. The trick is to get an iTunes gift card (buy it there, ask a friend, try some dodgy ones - see sites below - or even buy it in eBay) and register it as an US account:
I hope the above helps otherwise let me know...

Setting up a second one wouldn't that cause some kind of conflict if it is already linked to your iPhone?

What users want is:- Clip and paste
- Landscape Keyboard avail in all apps
- Turn-by-turn navigation
- Ability to cache maps to memory (without a 3G connection, maps is useless)
- Opening up of the Bluetooth stack
| | | | | Agreed.
Although it's worth UGing to 2.2 for a more stable Safari
(& check out the new street view addition to google maps - it maybe eye candy, but it's very, very impresive eye candy - it works incredably well (I was on wifi at the time) to be fair.

Personally I'm not going to bother with 2.2. | | | | | + tethering.
2.2 screwed up my ActiveSync E-Mail. About 3 times a day, the e-mail app will go berserk and try to connect to the e-mail server in 1/2 second intervals. Won't stop until I force-close it :-(
