To answer the first question, I believe you can update a jailbroken iPhone to the latest software without problems, it will simply (and obviously) no longer be jailbroken. However, I have not done this myself so cannot guarantee it. The other point is would you want to? I notice 2.2 has just been jailbroken in the last day or so.

No idea on the second question, sorry.

Have you any more info about getting a UK/US iTunes account without a credit card or address from either of those places?
OK. Have updated my iPhone to 2.2 following the "traditional" method (i.e. Pwnage Tool). Not sure if it is even worth the pain for this update...

Still intrigue at what Swisscom is going to tell me next time I ask them...

Thanks,

But what if you already have an iTunes account? Setting up a second one wouldn't that cause some kind of conflict if it is already linked to your iPhone?
I haven't tried this myself (too busy at the moment) but have asked a friend that has been doing this for a while and he said that he has experienced no problem. He even mentioned about the possibility of having two iTunes libraries.

Sorry I cannot throw more light on this...

Cheers,

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

For those of you who are interested, there's a free upload service to create ring tones for the iPhone.

Just upload, snip out the bit you need (must be no longer than 30 seconds) and there you have it.

Address is here.http://www.iwfr.net/mp3toringtone/

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Did you actually try this site? I'm not quite sure how this website would go about creating ringtones for the iphone.

Still, its a great idea by the owner of this website to increase the size of his mp3 collection. Dont forget that if you upload a copyrighted music file to either this or any other site then you're seriously breaking the law (unlike if you download copyrighted material, in which case you're only slightly breaking the law )

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Anyone who has a mac, with Garageband, can easily create their own ringtones.

Import song from iTunes into Garageband
Cut the section of the song you want (<45 seconds)
And choose "Export as ringtone"
Then Sync

Easy

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I have a question for all iPhone users / drivers out there:

I'm looking for a hands-free car kit for a Christmas present, but don't have a clue, really, what to look for, where and how much it would cost.

Do any of you have the "appropriate" kit and could you tell me what to look out for, and where? Should I try Swisscom/MobileZone or can I find it at an electronics store such as Fust, Interdiscount? (Zurich City area).

Thanks for any input and suggestions.

I was under the impression that downloading copyrighted material in Switzerland is legal for personal use. Did this change recently?

(Edit: sorry this was already mentioned earlier.)

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Picking one up today from Interdiscount. 899chf but with 100chf free credit and about 150 mins of surfing time included. Obviously still locked for 2 years but I am back in the UK next week so expect to hear of how to get round this proble. Has anyone had any problems downloading music on Vista from the media player. I have a lot on there already. I will then move over to ITunes.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hi all,
I am sure I read this somewhere on this thread but am dammed if I can find it again. Is it possible to get the ITunes website from Ger to Eng? As soon as it roots through.com I can read anything.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

THEY'VE FINALLY DONE IT
A word to the wise, if you're looking to sell your iPhone 3G you should wait until the unlock is released, because an unlocked iPhone will be worth a lot more than a locked one

Well this has been a long time coming. It seems that the iPhone Dev-Team has finally done the impossible -- they've gone and unlocked the iPhone 3G. The hack isn't out yet (the team says they're shooting for a December 31st release), and it requires that you've got a baseband of 2.11.07 or earlier, but when it drops, the crew seems fairly confident it will result in freedom from carrier oppression. The team is packaging the app -- formerly codenamed "yellowsn0w" -- into a user-friendly app a la PwnageTool and QuickPwn. Of course, you know how this cat and mouse game goes by now, so don't be surprised when Jobs and company come calling with an update that adds toast making to the official menu, but breaks your breaks all over again.

iPhone 3G finally unlocked by the Dev-Team! originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 08:43:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

And on cue the devteam finally releases an unlock for the iPhone. I expect prices on Ricardo, Ebay etc.. to soar.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Is it possible to transfer my DVD's to my MacBook and then to my IPhone with the software provided or do I need to download something? I have loads of DVD's and don't really want to pay for more via ITunes when I have so many already.

Cheers

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

You can use any custom ringtone that you add to your phone as an alarm tone. Whilst this obviously adds a time constraint to the length of track you can use, you should be waking up and turning off the alarm within 30 seconds anyway

And the process for doing this is described 10 or 11 posts up the page ^^
