Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

googled it and found out that apps collaps, a massive amount of user world wide have that prob, no matter if first generation, g3 fon, jailbreaked or not.
solution is either to look if updates are about to install or delete all and re-install. i updated the ones that had an update in store...now all works fine again.

Turn-by-turn GPS arrives on the iphone; I've tried it and it works pretty well. The main attraction though is not the Satnav, but the fact that you can now download the maps to the phone memory saving on exorbitant 3G roaming charges.

The only catch is that you will need a jailbroken iPhone, Apple clearly don't want this anywhere near their Appstore.

Nice to see that the new version is out. I've been following developments at xGPS for a while now. The absence of a decent navigation program is one thing that has been keeping me away from getting an iPhone. The question is now how much space one needs to store these maps offline. Since the map images are not vector-based, I imagine that it would it would take quite a lot of space to have, say, all (or even part) of Switzerland.

You're right Dodger, they're not vector maps but rather bloated google map tiles (17 levels of zoom) so the size of Basel on its own is about 20MB.

However there is a standalone desktop app which allows you to download the maps easily and even decide which level of zoom you want. It also simplifies the wireless transfer to the iphone, so its great for a weekend in Prague or London but not if you want the whole of Europe on your device.

This appears to be a good breakdown of expected map file size. Picking different zoom levels for different areas is a good idea. I do a fair bit of long-distance driving in Germany, so while it would be handy to have detail at an Autobahn level, map details for every single town on the way would be pointless and prohibitive.

A while ago I saw a separate GPS module at www.gomite.com (site down at the moment). Your device communicates via WiFi with this keyring-sized module, which contains all the map info and a GPS receiver. So then no 3G is needed at all. Unfortunately it doesn't look like anything has happened there for months so I guess it's dead.

Checked that, fetch is set to manual. Push has always been set to on (I think), but never did anything. I certainly haven't changed it recently.

That probably means that your e-mail host has enabled push notification for the iPhone then. AFAIK, it's more or less only Yahoo mail that currently supports it.

did you do a software update before this happened? this should have worked all along for you - yahoo has been offering push e-mail to iPhone users ever since the 2G iPhone was released. However, it has been notoriously unreliable.

I don't think there have been any updates for a while, I sync the phone up with the Mac at least once a week so I wouldn't have missed any. I got the latest OSX updates from Apple this weekend, but I doubt that has anything to do with it, I don't think iPhone updates are included.

Maybe Yahoo is going through a brief period of reliability.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

There hasn't been an iPhone firmware update since the end of January, IIRC.

Most likely, Yahoo pushed (no pun intended) out this feature to more (international ?) users just now.

Iphone OS 3.0 will be released shortly and in terms of what to expect, Apple have announced a preview day tomorrow. Its quite amazing how a firmware upgrade is reason enough to call a press conference

Nope, that's nothing new - I had the push service working on my 2g iPhone more than a year ago. It sometimes worked, sometimes it didn't. Just unreliable. But I clearly remember being surprised that e-mails started to get pushed again all of a sudden after the service had been down for so long that I didn't even remember when it had worked for the last time :-)

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hi folk,

Spot the iphone virgin

I bought my iphone today, and it hooked up to the sat nav in the car on the way home no problem, and I recieved calls (kept my old number). I got home setup apple id and itunes, and incorrectly entered the phone number, but didn't notice. I did the sync' of the phone, then started to wondered why the phone had not rung. I checked and I noticed my mistake with the number, the phone number is incorrect in itunes, and the 'My Number' display on the iphone, since the sync'. It will send and receive text, and make calls, but will not receive them, I do get a voice message in German/French/Italian (none of which I speak well enough), which I think says the phone is blocked! Also it will no longer accept bluetooth although it is turned on, but the icon is grey, and the icon to the left of the time switches betweens a small capital E & 3G, should it do that?

I've checked the manual, and the apple support, but couldn't find anything useful to tell me what the problem is or how to fix it... so hopefully the EF cavalry can come to the rescue. It's made worse by the fact that I go to France 1st thing Monday, so need to try and sort this out quick sharp, so any ideas?

Thanks in advance

PG

Hi PG,
Just seen your PM, but perhaps others may also have some ideas.
I did the activation thing something like 7 months ago so I can't even remember what the procedure was, but perhaps a first step might be to reset the iphone.

To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.

It will do no harm and might restore your bluetooth. However it sounds like you may have a network block issue, which your provider (orange/swisscom) should be able to sort out quickly. It might even be worth taking it back to the store and not leaving until they've sorted it out. Sorry I can't be of more help, but since its a one-time only event its impossible for me to reproduce here.

Good luck, and hope you get on with enjoying your new toy.
