Now wondering if I should have waited and gone with a new HTC device instead.
I would have. I recently pre-ordered an HTC Touch Pro 2. I loved the Touch HD but missed the keyboard. The iPhone 3G is a great multimedia / consumer phone but it's not great for business use.

Which contract did you get a free iPhone on?

Orange iPhone Maxima or something like that. I've been with Orange for about 10 years if I include my time in the UK too and although the iPhone wasn't meant to be free with this package (it should have been 130 odd CHF) I wangled it with my gift of the gab

There's definately a new iPhone on the way... Vodafone have classed the current 3G 16GB as EOL in an internal memo. I'm having one!

It'd have to be one heck of an update for me to get one. I'm only half-way through my two-year contract so I'd have to get it at full price - which will be around 1200 Fr. if last-year's launch-prices are any indication

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I'm watching this with interest but am with Peter on this one.

From what I've read of the credible rumours - 32GB storage, video-enabled camera, more powerful CPU, digital compass and FM radio - the cost of the switch wouldn't be worth it.

If that's what pans out I'll just take the OS upgrade and carry on as I am for another 12 months.

Oh yeah, I don't think anyone should be under any illusions, it's simply not possible to conduct productive business on the iPhone - it's a fun toy at best but shouldn't be used for anything other than personal use. As for business use I can highly recommend the Blackberry range (I like the Bold), especially if your organization has a BES server.

It's common knowledge that the iPhone has very poor MS exchange support, and the lack of hardware keyboard a la Blackberry, not to mention the lack of anything approaching a BES server that lets you administrate group policy etc, ensures it will never become a business phone as long as it lacks those crucial features.

The iPhone is a personal item only, not intended for enterprise use, and was only ever designed as such. Windows Mobile and BB (as well as Palm when it launches the new Pre, which is set to be hot stuff) will remain business kings for some time to come...

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

yeah, most businesses still operate in a M$ world.

Im happy that at work we use apple computers.

You are right though, apple has a lot of work to do in toppling the enterprise competition. However that doesnt make the iphone a "toy at best".

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

The iPhone has one of the slickest UI's of ANY phone, if not the slickest, an the amount of genuinely useful apps it now has is staggering... hence why I want one.

However it still doesn't change the fact that hardware and feature-wise, the iPhone has lagged behind the competition considerably since release, lacking even the most basic stuff that we take for granted on Nokia/HTC devices. OS 3.0 will go some way towards changing this, and hopefully the new iPhone will sort the camera out, though it probably still won't be fully up to scratch compared to the 5MP and now 8MP monsters we are seeing on the market.

Can you qualify what you mean by "lacking even the most basic stuff that we take for granted on Nokia/HTC devices"?

Sure, this is all basic stuff. and well publicised.. copy and paste, turn-by-turn navigation, expandable memory, picture MMS, removeable battery...

I would certainly disagree with your characterisation of those "features" as "basic stuff". I had not realised that turn by turn navigation was a basic feature offered in most other manufacturers handsets

Yeah, i see many people moot copy and paste as a serious omission on the iphone. I must say, you and those guys must have different lifestyles than i.... until know, I have never knowingly felt the frustrating loss of being not being able to cut and paste things on my phone

However, as you obviously know, the next software update that apple so generously provide (in addition to about the 25 other ones they have provided for improvements and after listening to their customers), will have cut and paste just for you and your kind

Turn by turn navigation is i guess most appropriate when using the iphone as an in car satellite navigation system. This is hardly a basic feature, and I do not think most people see the iphone as being comparable to a purpose build sat nav.

Expandable memory... yeah, just not apples way i guess.... plus it would interfere with their all important aesthetic designs, these ungainly slots, uckkkk.

removable battery, another bugbear of the hardcore business user. I can see this having merit for those who travel extensively for their work, although I really wonder what percentage of people have second batteries for their phone... i would marvel if its higher than a couple of percent. As I am mostly desk bound, I am perfectly happy with the inbuilt battery, and do not understand why you cant just pack a power charger for the occasions you need to charge on the road.

MMS was a conscious decision on Steve Jobs part as far as i know, to get people to move away from sending blurry images or useless electronic birthday cards, to using the inbuilt and superbly designed email application. My experiences thus far of MMS's on the one or two occasions i have had cause to send or receive, have been highly unimpressive.

On the other hand, what those who would seek to criticise the iphone often forget, is that due to the user interface and fantastic functionality of the phone in general (plus some brilliant applications which are often free), the iphone, like most apple products, simply work and this makes you far more productive overall compared to using the crappy UI and "superior" feature set of these other phones.

Any GPS-equipped device, obviously. WM and SYmbian have had it for years. Strange how so many iPhone users complained about it that they're now adding it in OS 3.0?

Hourses for courses, it's very useful if you do use it, like anything I guess. They're also adding it in 3,0 as so many people complained about it.

Point is after a ear the inbuilt battery lkoses a lot of charge, all my friends with 3G's have commented on this. The handset has to be returned to an Apple store for a change... or you can risk voiding the warranty by doing it yourself which many people won't risk.

Strange, i've been taking clear photos of things and sending them to friends for ages.

I already said the Apple UI was the best of any handset and that I would be buying the next verison... stop being so defensive. I hate to use the word "fanboy", but in this instance...

I am not being defensive, I am countering some of the issues that you raised. I see no need to be defensive unless you would like to be offensive.

I am an apple fan, and comfortable with that.
