Apple are arrogant because of the contempt for which the treat their userbase, they are often percieved as a smug and elitist outfit and this is common opinion on the internet. That's no news to anyone (or shouldn't be).
Who cares? Nobody is being forced to buy their products at gunpoint. I happen to like the way they have put their products together and bought some of them based on my own evaluation. The same with my car, hi-fi equipment, etc.

Anyway, any company who isn't a bit smug about their own products is one that doesn't care that much about them.

Yep, I'll go along with that. I use, and like using their products, but their attitude towards their users stinks IMHO

Orange has details for new subscriptions and a facility to pre-order on its website now.

I'll try calling them tomorrow about upgrades . . .

True, but having been involved with the apple business maybe I tend to think it more about apple than I would about other companies.

Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Sunrise has had an iPhone info page up for over a year, allowing you to fill out a form to receive info if/when they support or sell the iPhone. I'm on their prepaid with a jailbroken 2G iPhone, and my wife has a contract with them, so I'm crossing my fingers they'll be carrying the 3Gs. Then I'll get a contract and pass mine iPhone on to her.

hope hope.

Otherwise, I found out a few weeks ago that Sunrise has actually been subsidizing the iPhone 3G through digitec all along. You can get an 8GB version for 49fr with a new 24month contract. That's plan B.

edit: I see now the digitec deal was mentioned here a while ago.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I called Orange and got the prices for an upgrade within your subscription period. This is the same as buying it without a contract.

iPhone 3GS 32gb - CHF1299
iPhone 3GS 16gb - CHF1099
iPhone 3G 8gb - CHF899

Woah!

In the UK you can buy a 8gb iPhone 3G for GBP342.54 and that includes 12 months of free and unlimited 3g data and wifi access.

It's different for me - when I log onto "My Account" on the website and go to My Offers, the prices are much lower, the most expensive being to extend my contract for another 12 months on Optima 30 and get a 32GB 3G(S) - CHF499.

My account runs out in August as I only signed up for 12 months - maybe that has something to do with it.

That is still an operator subsidised price. Play UK have a sim unlocked 8GB for £549 which is about the same, if not more than the Sfr 900 Swiss price quoted.

This is Switzerland, where they just invented the telephone. And electricity. And oh, now they're teaching the earth is round. And somebody has to pay for it!

The price might drop even further once your contract ends. I'm actually in the same boat having signed a 12 month contract (so glad I didn't go for 24 months) last August. The only question now is whether I upgrade to the 3GS or go for a Palm Pre.

I realise that this is still subsidised, but it compares very favourably with the Swiss Pay As You Go deals.

Let's look at another comparison for the 32g unsubsidised cost - you can buy the cheapest Apple laptop, a white 13" Macbook, for exactly the same price: CHF1299. I believe the laptop is unsubsidised!

I was thinking that as well (also glad I only chose 12 monhts). I'm definitely going to wait the six weeks or so until the contract is up, as I want to get a better impression of the new handset from user reviews as well a potential price drop.

I'm severely tempted by the Pre, but we're a Mac household and have got very used to the tight iPhone integration with the rest of the kit - I'm not convinced the Pre syncing with iTunes is going to last long.

I even found myself entertaining thoughts of owning both in an idle moment yesterday, but pushed them away sharpish

Yeah, but you'd look pretty odd walking around with one of those clamped to your ear...

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Not sure if this is new or not, but Orange's homepage has a 3GS portal with prices etc: http://shop.orange.ch/en/icat/apple?...rtal_iphone3GS

Swisscom doesn't have much yet apart from actually listing it: http://www.swisscom.ch/res/internet/...?languageId=en

Plans look the same as before to me - at first glance.

Just going through the specs on Orange's website and didn't see MMS mentioned, I wonder if they're not offering it...

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I'm just wondering how big the market is going to be for the 3GS. The 3G sold by the bucketful last year, mainly, I believe, because it was the first official iPhone on sale in Switzerland. Of those people that bought into the iPhone last year, most will be locked into a 2 year contract with still at least a year to run.

Aside from the new hardware features (2x speed, compass, supposedly better battery life, and I do believe the voice recognition is dependant on the new hardware) most of the new features will be available on the old 3G with version 3 of the software.

The physical appearence between the two seems to be minimal which would discourage the fashion buyer who already owns a 3G.

Sure there'll be the early adopter and fan markets, but they only make up a small percentage of the general mobile buying market.

I'm a gadget freak and there's not enough in the package to make me pay full retail on the new 3GS while I'm still locked into a 2 year contract for the old one.

I think the 3GS may be a sales flop. I suppose time will prove one way or another.

After getting locked into a 2 year contract before, I made sure I went for one year on the 3G, I was pretty much certain they'd release new iphone in a year.

I believe Swisscom were only offering 2-year contracts back then, right? I think that's how I ended up in the contract. I'm not a happy camper but hey, the 3G will serve me well for another year (unless the back falls off :-)

It also has a new PowerVR GPU inside which supports OpenGL 2.0 and means vastly uprated graphics. Also the CPU is 2x faster. For existing iPhone users the upgrade probably wont be too big of a deal, but for those new to them... it should be good. Remember iPhone users are still a relatively small proportion of the mobile market, there are still tons of people who don't have one, so it will sell like hotcakes for the next few eyars at least with every incarnation imo.
