The General iPhone Thread and FAQ

I'd like to start this off with a FAQ for the iPhone 3G in Switzerland - I'll complete it as more information becomes available.

General info

What's the difference between the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone?

The new iPhone 3G (which will be sold starting Juli 11) has a faster (3G, hence the name) radio and a GPS component. It also sports a new firmware version which includes wireless sync capability (including push-email) via Apple's own Mobile Me (www.me.com) service and via Microsoft's Exchange/DirectPush platform. The latter can be used to hook up the iPhone to your company's MS Exchange server. The 2.0 firmware will also be made available for current 1st Gen iPhones.
Other than that, there are only minor differences in shape and in battery life.

Which versions of the iPhone 3G are there?

The iPhone 3G is currently sold in a version with 8gb of memory (black only) and one with 16gb of memory (sold with a white or a black back side). Apart from the memory size and the colors, all iPhone 3Gs are identical.

Where is the iPhone 3G available in Switzerland?

Apple has signed agreements with Swisscom and Orange. The iPhone is sold in Swisscom and Orange shops (both offline and online) and in some of their partner stores (notably Mobilezone, Interdiscount and Mediamarkt). It is also sold by Apple Premium Resellers, notably by Dataquest, Ingenodata and Letec.
The iPhone 3G isn't distributed directly by Apple but by Swisscom and Orange. It is likely that Swisscom and Orange will make sure their shops get plenty of phones while their partners and the APRs will receive a smaller number of phones

Will Sunrise ever be selling the iPhone?

That's unknown at this point. However, Sunrise customers can sign up for a newsletter if they want to stay informed: http://www.sunrise.ch/iphone

Features and technical issues

Can I use the iPhone for navigation?

The iPhone 3G includes Google Maps. While GM can plot a route for your trip, it doesn't include spoken turn-by-turn directions and is thus not very useful for in-car navigation. TomTom, however, has announced that they're working on an iPhone version of their navigation software which will be made available later this year.

How's the battery life of the iPhone 3G?

That largely depends on the usage and of the quality of the network in your area. If 3G coverage isn't great, the phone will power up the radio and use up much more power. Also, it might constantly switch between 3G and EDGE which uses up lots of power as well. In general, it is reported that battery life is drastically worse compared to the 1st gen iPhone when location services (GPS) and 3G are turned on. Some people report that their iPhone 3Gs won't even last until noon when fully charged in the morning. Generally, the battery life isn't worse than that of other phones with GPS, 3G and push services.

What can I do to improve battery life?

Disable the services you don't need. If you have WiFi at home, for example, you can disable 3G. If you don't use location services, you can disable that as well. During the day you probably won't be using WiFi all the time so you can disable that.
The three main battery hogs: 3G, Push services and location services (in that order)

Why does the iPhone 3G's screen seem to have a yellowish tint compared to the 1st gen iPhone?

According to the senior director of product marketing of the iPhone, the screen has deliberatly been calibrated so that colors are warmer and blacks look nicer. Compared to the 1st gen iPhone, the screens look slightly yellowish. If you didn't compare them directly, you probably won't have noticed the difference. More info on this can be found here: http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/12/i...the-day-after/

How do I get Mobile Me Syncing to work?

Follow this guide: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/

App Store

Why aren't all applications available in all countries?

That has not been commented on by Apple yet. Because the publishers can determine in which stores the applications are sold, it is believed that some choose not to sell / distribute applications outside of the US, for whatever reason.
Also, some countries may have laws that prevent some applications from being sold online. For example, there are no games sold in the Irish iTunes Store at this time because of that.

The tips and tricks section

What "hidden" features are available on the iPhone 3G / FW 2.0?

- Double-Click on the home button to enable/disable the keylock
- Clicking and holding on an image in Safari and e-Mail will let you save the image to your camera library
- if music's playing you can double-tap while you're on the home screen and it'll bring up a pop-up that lets you control iTunes
- Rotating the iPhone while Calculator is running will bring up the new scientific calc
- A double-tap in the phone opens the favorites in the call list
- You can now select several E-mails at once to delete
- The microphone on the iPhone headset is touch-sensitive: pinching it once will pause a song or answer a call, double pinching it will fast forward
- If you have 3G or WiFi enabled, you can surf the web while talking on the phone
- if music's playing you can double-tap while you're on the home screen and it'll bring up a pop-up that lets you control iTunes
- You can watch embedded Youtube videos in Safari

Swisscom-related info

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: How does the iPhone 3G cost and which price-plans are available?

There are 5 different price-categories available. All contracts are for 24 months. You have the right to return all purchases within a 14-day period for a full re-fund. All iPhones sold directly by Swisscom have two years of warranty. In case yours breaks, you'll get a replacement for the duration of the repair. It's unclear if Swisscom partner stores have the same warranty terms. Phones sold in Swisscom stores can be activated at home. Those sold in partner stores need to be activated in-store.

Liberty Grande: 55 Fr. per month, including 1gb of data volume. Phone calls cost 50 Rp / hour (fixnet/Swisscom mobile) and 50 Rp / min (other carriers). iPhones cost 99 Fr. for the 8gb version, 199 Fr. for the 16gb version

Liberty Mezzo: 35 Fr. per month, including 250mb of data volume. Phone calls cost 50 Rp / hour (fixnet/Swisscom mobile) and 50 Rp / min (other carriers). iPhones cost 199 Fr. for the 8gb version, 299 Fr. for the 16gb version

Liberty Piccolo: 25 Fr. per month, including 100mb of data volume. Phone calls cost 70 Rp / hour (fixnet/Swisscom mobile) and 60 Rp / min (other carriers). iPhones cost 249 Fr. for the 8gb version, 349 Fr. for the 16gb version

Easy Liberty Uno: This is a pre-paid plan. No data volume is included. 1mb of data traffic costs 1 Fr., Calls cost 80 Rp. per hour (fixnet/Swisscom mobile) and 70 Rp (other providers)

Without a contract: 999 Fr. for the 8gb version, 1199 for the 16gb version. These are said to be completely unlocked.

there are also corporate price-plans. I won't list these here. More information is available on www.swisscom.ch/iphone

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: Can I use these price-plans with handsets other than the iPhone?

Yes, you can. Anyone can subscribe to these packages with any handset.

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: What happens, when I have used up the included data traffic?

Each additional megabyte costs 0.10 Fr. (careful: traffic is metered in 100kb steps). However, data traffic costs are capped: there's a maximum of 5 Fr. per day for data traffic, no matter how much you use up. That also counts for the prepaid package.

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: Can I check how much of my data volume I've already used up?

Yes - send an SMS that contains the text "Status" (without the quotation marks...) to 444

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: Can I use Swisscom's WiFi hotspots with the iPhone?

Yes - all price-plans include access to all of Swisscom's 1100 WiFi hotspots. There's no initial charge to use them, however, the data volume included in your subscription is used up on Swisscom hotspots as well!

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: When I use non-Swisscom WiFi hotspots at home and on the road, is my included data volume used up as well?

No.

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: Is Visual Voicemail included?

Swisscom offers Visual Voicemail. It's free in Switzerland (doesn't count towards your included data volume) but be careful when you're abroad - normal data tariffs apply for the traffic caused by Visual Voicemail.

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: What about roaming?

There are no roaming packages available from Swisscom at this time. Data traffic abroad (also charged for Visual Voicemail) can be extremely expensive. Since the iPhone is almost permanently networked, costs can be exorbitant, even if you don't surf the web on the phone when you're abroad. Make sure you disable data traffic when you're roaming outside of Switzerland!

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: Can I buy the pre-paid package and use the phone with a different SIM-card?

All iPhone sold with a contract are operator-locked to Swisscom. According to a Swisscom salesperson, that means they can be used with any other Swisscom SIM-card but not with different carriers. Prepaid packages are only sold by Swisscom at this time - they're not available in partner shops.

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: I already have a contract. When can I renew / upgrade to an iPhone?

If your contract has less than 3 months until it auto-renews, you can renew / upgrade to an iPhone. The price of the phone will be determined according to your discount-level (which depends on how good a customer you are).

iPhone 3G and Swisscom: I just signed a new contract - can I still get an iPhone at a discount?

Yes, but probably not on July 11. Swisscom will have an offer for existing customers in August or September. If you absolutely need to have a new iPhone on the first day, you have two options: 1. get an additional contract and a new phone number. 2. cancel your pre-existing contract and get a new one. If you cancel early, however, you'll need to pay the remaining subscription tariff for the full term!

Orange-related info

iPhone 3G and Orange: How much does the iPhone 3G cost and which price-plans are available?

Orange offers three different packages and also sells the iPhone without a contract (but operator-locked). All three subscriptions are available with both 12 and 24 month contracts. Orange doesn't offer a prepaid package. All packages include a 14-day refund policy and 24 months of warranty. Well, that's it for now - I you find mistakes or have additional info, please let me know and I'll update the FAQ.
