Offmaps is a good app for the offline storage of maps without resorting to a jailbreak.

Does the new TomTom app come with traffic warnings?
There is no traffic information yet (v1.0) however TomTom have indicated that this is coming. It does have the speed/traffic light camera alerts though.

I want to sync my iPhone with windows vista calender (home edition), any clue how it can be done?
Bad news:
1. iphone calendar will not sync with Windows Calendar
2. In a little over a month Windows 7 will come out, and windows calendar will no longer exist on that platform.
3. Windows now offers a download (windows update) of what they call essentials or something similar which is what will be on the new OS which will be their new mail, calendar, etc. system

iPhone easily syncs with Outlook, Google calendar, and others.

In my opinion, I would leave Windows Calendar alone and start using something else.

last night I installed TomTom on my iphone and have to say, its pretty impressive. Its a slightly cut down version from the TomTom standalone units, but still very usable. In terms of mapping there is a D-A-CH version for just those three countries, or if you have the space (and money) you could splash out and get the whole of Western Europe, then all you need is an el cheapo car holder and charger from Interdiscount and you're all set.
Would anyone care to venture a comparison between TomTom and Navigon?

I once tried a TomTom One in a hire car and I found it to be horribly clunky compared to my Mio Digiwalker 520.

Anyway, I know it's unlikely that anyone would have both apps, but any comparison attempts would be welcome.

Guten Tag

guy has sent eamil to iphoneservices.ch

reply was above n translates as follows: we install jailbreak to install Cydia and Installer, fon then is mms n video-rec ready. lock will deleted via proxi-sim. seems that the seller works 100% ok, is trustworthy as some guy from Thun/CH has bought a fon there n is ok with it.

These guys might be trustworthy, but they might want to make a better presentation to match.

It sounds like you'd be better off dealing with a well rated Ricardo seller. Otherwise, those prices aren't better than Digitec, and they have a good reputation and iPhones in stock. They also do the same deal with Sunrise.
http://www.digitec.ch/ But as I said before, if you add it all up, you're paying a lot over two years if you make the abo. I got mine from Ricardo for 750fr, sealed and with a 2 year warranty.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hi all,

This may be slightly OT, although this is the nearest thread I can find to my question.

I have an iPhone 3G, my carrier being O2 in the UK. I'd like to port my iPhone over to a .ch network, but I think jailbreaking will be out of the question for me, as i'm a member of the Apple Dev Con, for iPhone app coding -- I highly suspect it would invalidate my membership.

Question is, anyone have any experience with porting their locked iPhone over from another country's mobile network to .ch? I'll probably have to enquire with O2 anyway, but worth asking..

Cheers

dsw.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I am thinking about buying an iphone(3gs) with swisscom or orange connection. As far as i read in the net,the contract is over 24 months.

I want to know if its possible to break the contract inbetween say in 6 months or so and pay the remaining amount of the phone's price how much ever it is( i would be paying 200 chf while taking the connection)and get the phone unlocked.

The reason for breaking the contract is say a very valid reason of leaving the country.I am not sure whether i will be able to pay the full amount now and buy the phone.

I am going to the swisscom shop tomoro and check it out.But still if any EF'ers knew anythng about this,it would be great if you could advise.

Thanks in advance
Nirmala.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

First of all, the Swisscom contract term is only 24 months. With Orange, you can go with 12 months and 24 months. The cost of the phone will vary with the contract length and the package you take (number of minutes per month).

I would suggest you ask in the shop how it works if you need to leave the country after six months. They should be able to tell you how the buy-out works.

I went for the 12 month option with Orange. Details of a special offer they are running are in my post on page 71 (lower on the page).

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

So I have an iphone just now. Anybody know of any good sim card only contracts I could get when I come to Switzerland?

I use the net on it a lot (naturally) so will need unlimited internet (1GB I guess is the norm)

I won't need many included minutes or sms since it will just be me and my wife in Switzerland...

Thanks in advance!

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Hi everyone, is anybody else experiencing constant drop outs on the Swisscom network? I can hardly use my iphone anymore as I loose connection every 2-3 minutes for a good 20 seconds???

Just wondering if its hardware/software (seemed to start when os 3.0 came out) and if I am alone with this issue?

Cheers!

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Just now starting to use my iPhone to buy SBB tickets.

Anyone know if the tickets I buy are only valid for me - ie. persönlich? Or can I buy a ticket for a person traveling with me as well? Anyone ever try to do this?

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Anyone know how long it takes to get the iPhone when ordered online? What's the waiting time right now? I ordered one last Sunday but still haven't received any notice of shipment or anything. I think they charged my credit card already. Any info would be nice as the guys in the store seem to have little to no clue about online issues.

Waiting time is up to 3-4 weeks on average from what i've seen so far.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Well f that. I really hope it doesn't take that long. I should've looked into that a bit more. No wonder they give you a 50CHF credit on your account. All the inconvenience might not be worth that much
