Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I can't remember exactly how, but I did manage it.

You should be able to backup your contacts from the SE to a computer using a utility from the SE website.

From there I think I imported them into contacts on the mac.

Very vague I know, but somewhere to get started.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

Crikey, its been a while since I had an SE phone, but if I remember correctly the SE desktop app syncs with Outlook (contacts, calendar entries, todo list, notes etc..). iTunes will then sync all the data from Outlook onto your new iphone. To be clear, the bridge between the two devices is MS Outlook.

Hello All,

I just got myself a shiny new black iphone 3g s (16 gb). The only impediment to using it is in transferring all my contacts from my old phone (SE K750i).

I have almost 300-350 contacts and as of now there seems to be no way I can transfer them without manually doing it (which kills all the appetite). I tried using Bluetooth, but the iphone couldnt pick up the SE and then again, you can only send 1 contact at a time, so thats slow.

I would appreciate if someone could offer guidance in this as the prospect of recreating all my contacts on the iphone is really giving me sleepless nights.
You did not say if you were with Swisscom or Orange. I had Orange do the transfer of the old data/contacts in-store. I think it cost CHF 9. They have a little machine that does the transfer.

I would think that Swisscom has a similar service if you are with them.

First question is which modem firmware is it on (settings>General>about)? If its 04.26.08 or earlier you should be able to unlock, if its a later version you're out of luck for the moment. Assuming its still on 04.26.08 the procedure is quite simple, just download a custom iPhone 3.1.2 firmware for your iPhone (One which has been modified to upgrade all but the modem firmware to the latest FW). Do a shift-restore in iTunes (force itunes to restore using your fw). Once your phone is running the latest 3.1.2 firmware, you download and install ultrasn0w from the Cydia repository, run it and voila ... an unlocked iPhone on the latest 3.1.2 firmware.

Thanks. I am on Orange with a 1 year contract. I'll pop into the store and see if they can help me out.

I'm currently running iphone 3.0 with modem firmware 04.26.08, jailbroken and unlocked (I think it was ultrasnow).

I want to upgrade to 3.1.2 because 3.0 has the SMS security flaw, but to maintain my phone unlocked and jailbroken (or rejailbreak). The advice on the iphone dev team blog isn't very clear and I think, addresses problems that i don't have.

Castro - where do I go from here and in what order? Itunes, when I open it, keeps telling me there's a new iTunes, that there's a new iphone firmaware update (i.e. 3.1.2) and also pops up a message that my carrier settings need updating. I don't want to do something in the wrong order and end up relocking or bricking my phone.

the settings say 5.11.07, so presumably that's ok to unlock?

Do I have to find 04.26.08 first?

Thanks a lot for your help Castro!

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I notice that I am running the same firmware on my 3gs (the o2 I am referring to in my above post belongs to my girlfriend).

Hmmm, isn't that a bit odd or am I looking at the wrong thing).

castro,

you think this following process would work? i see there is a similar ipsw for 3.1.2 so i could also update her phone to that and run the similar process?

far too little far too late. like motorola, nokia rested on its fat laurels for much too long.

sure it is good at making basic handsets, but it was blown out of the water in smartphones so badly, it probably still doesnt even know what hit it.

Agreed. What with the success of the iPhone, Nokia just don't seem to get what people want from a smartphone. I thought the N97 was going to be the phone to beat the Apple offering but it was a spectacular misfire. Symbian just doesn't cut it and they messed up on the keyboard and resistive screen.

For a company that was on top for so long, they've been totally blindsided. Amazingly, like Sony with the Walkman brand in the music market they have dropped the ball badly in the phone market.

They need to ramp up their smartphone efforts, pronto. The N900 looks promising but a crappy resistive touchscreen lets it down. I'm not convinced that Maemo is the right OS to match the iPhone either (I have a Nokia N800 so I've used Maemo quite a bit).

What they need is something like the N900 but with capacitive screen and running a decent smartphone OS like Android. Give up on their proprietary OSes - they just don't have the software skill - and concentrate on the hardware which they have done so well in the past.

I'm sure they know what it takes - however, Nokia has screwed up twice over the last 2 years:

1. they were caught entirely by surprise by the iPhone.
2. they massively underestimated the iPhone's success.

It takes years to develop an operating system such as the iPhone OS or Android.

Nokia and RIM will share Palm's fate if they don't come up with something adequate FAST. RIM seems to think it can keep on tweaking its functional but antiquated OS into something sleek and touch-friendly. Wrong. They'll eventually need to do a complete re-write of the OS if they want to stay competitive. Same goes for Microsoft (I believe at least they have realized that - but too late) and Nokia. All of those companies better start NOW to get their act together or their market share will drop to 0 like Palm's over the next 1-2 years.

Hiya, I need to read up on this first since I'm not sure whether you need to update the fw to something like 3.0.1 to get the modem fw upto 04.26.08, then from there onto 3.1.2 (still with 04.26.08) or whether you can safely unlock 5.11.07. There are obviously benefits to having the last unlockable modem firmware, so you may need to do an intermediate step.

Quick question, is this phone registered on your iTunes account? if not you will need to use an already activated firmware (IPSW), if it is you can use an unactivated one and then once its jailbroken/unlocked activate it as you would a new phone.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

we are primarily talking about my gf`s phone, as i am happy to have mine locked on swisscom for the time being.

to answer your question, her iphone is registered to her itunes account on her macbook.

my question back to you is, if im running the latest 3.1.2, why do I also have 5.11.07 on my iphone 3gs and not 04.26.08?

dont put yourself out on my account castro, only read up on this stuff if you are personally interested.

Hey again, sorry my mistake your modem firmware (5.11.07) is actually the latest one and as yet cannot be unlocked. I think somewhere along the line it was upgraded using the official iTunes update and that has taken the modem fw to the latest one.

Hopefully the Devteam/geohot will be releasing a new exploit for 5.11.07, but until then your only option would be an official unlock code from 02 or using one of those turbo sim cards (I wouldn't personally bother since you need to saw your sim card in half)..

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

hmmm, maybe one can downgrade from 5.11.07 to 04.26.08 but using this guide here but im not sure about the 5.08 bootloader part at the end, i.e. if her phone had this from the factory.

http://www.redmondpie.com/downgrade-...7-to-04.26.08/

i guess that rather than run the risk of bricking her phone, i had better wait for the devteam to produce what i am after, and hope that this doesnt take too long.

Re: The iPhone 3G thread and FAQ

I'm a huge fan of TomTom navigation software, but once again they've astounded me with their greed and apparent lack of common sense.
First of all they talked up the availability of a TomTom app around July last year to coincide with the release of the 3G. It then took them over a year to finally release the App, by which time they had already been beaten by several of their competitors.

Oh well, better late then never, but then they announce a custom iPhone cradle which they've just released for a staggering £99 . Given that you still need to shell out £79 (W.Europe) for a copy of the program + your iPhone, that makes an overall package price of around £179.

You can get a TomTom One standalone unit for under £70!!

TomTom BV = FAIL

They are sadly stereotyping iPhone users as the "more money than sense who will buy anything regardless" crowd.
