Tips for a Short Stay in Shanghai

I have limited time in Shanghai and would like to see a few of the best
highlights of the city and it's surroundings.

I will have two full days in Shanghai and have been told about the Nanjing
Road for shopping, Yuyuan Market and the Jin Mao building & Oriental
Pearl TV tower.

Any other hot tips for short stay would be appreciated. BTW, I am
referring to this weekend. Arrive on Saturday afternoon and leave for
Zürich on Tuesday.

Yes, I have read about the turtle soup.

Brought home a souvenir from my last trip to Bali. Took a month to get
rid of it. And it is not STD

take the MagLev to or from the airport. very cool passing the cars like they are coming at you. The Bund is cool to walk around...looks quite Western. I had Chinese hosts, so did not pay attention to where things were, but some cool and trendy bars here and there.

Once going to Singapore from Malaysis, via bus, we stopped at Johre Bharu for lunch... What I thought were small curried boiled potatoes, to go with my boiled Rice, turned out to be Turtle eggs (if I remember correctly)

Re: Tips for a Short Stay in Shanghai

If you want to get some suits or shirts made up, you can hit the Fabric Market on Lu Jia Bang Lu.

Yu'Nan Gardens are nice if you want to wander for an hour or 2.

I hear the Pearl tower is nice, but a bit of a tourist trap, so I never bothered.

Now if you're looking for bars, that's a different matter. I don't know if I could list them all here.
Also, the best steak house I found there was Monty's, on Yandang Lu, just off Huahai Lu.

Re: Tips for a Short Stay in Shanghai

the cloud 9 bar in grand hyatt, it's a bit touristy but the view is amazing.
M on the bund used to be a great place too (probably a bit outdated now but the view is still great)

& lastly xintiandi for the restaurants + clubs, bars etc

don't forget to eat the siu loong baos!

How much time do these specialists require to whip up a couple shirts?

Depends on how much you are willing to pay. Can be done in 24 hours. And as I recall, it wasn't a ridiculous price for the fast service...

Think it's open till 6 on a Saturday. Then you'd want to go in early enough on Sunday or Monday in case you need to have any little alterations done.

Re: Tips for a Short Stay in Shanghai

Wonderful tips. I have done a search on most of them... Amazing
amounts of data available!

The list is long, looks like I won't get much sleep

Thanks to all who contributed so quickly... and those that will come along
in the near future.

Why Shanghai? This will probably be my last business trip to China for a
while, closing it out with a few days in one of the few cities on this planet
that interests me. Did Beijing during my last trip May 2009.

I lived in a hotel room there for nearly 6 months last year. Nice city, but it's not quite as enjoyable when your return flight keeps getting cancelled time after time after time... And then I was stranded there when the company went under.

Good times...

Ah it wasn't so bad. Found some nice bars and great people. I'd go back, but for a short stay, with a definite return date...

Word to the wise, Don't go out on an all-night, Jaeger fuelled session the night before your flight. You REALLY don't want to have to suffer that all the way home... or even just on the ride to the airport...
