SA Caster Semenya - Declared Hermaphrodite

The controversy will continue.

Sep 11, 2009

ASSOCIATED PRESS
SYDNEY, Australia–World 800-metre champion Caster Semenya of South Africa has male and female sexual organs, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported. The finding poses an ethical and political quandary for world track and field's ruling body.

The Herald said extensive examinations of the 18-year-old runner ordered by the International Association of Athletics Federations have shown she is technically a hermaphrodite. Medical reports indicate she has no ovaries, but has internal testes, which are producing large amounts of testosterone.
The newspaper said the IAAF was tryng to contact the athlete to inform her of the results.

After dominating her race at the world championships in Berlin last month, Semenya was given blood and chromosome tests as well as a gynecological examination.

"This is a medical issue and not a doping issue where she was deliberately cheating," said IAAF spokesman Nick Davies.

"These tests do not suggest any suspicion of deliberate misconduct but seek to assess the possibility of a potential medical condition which would give Semenya an unfair advantage over her competitors. There is no automatic disqualification of results in a case like this."

The IAAF has said Semenya would probably keep her medal because the case was not related to a drug matter.

But the Herald said an alternative possibility was to award a second gold to the runner-up, Janeth Jepkosgei from Kenya.

Semenya's victory was overshadowed by speculation over her appearance, deep voice and radically improved performance. The IAAF's order of a gender test caused fierce protests in South Africa and complaints it infringed her human rights.

The report shocked and angered Semenya's family, The Times of London reported on its website.

"They are crazy. It can only be jealousy that makes them say that she is a man," said the athlete's grandmother, Maphuthi Sekgale. "I raised her as a young girl and I have no doubt that she is a girl."

Athletics SA president Leonard Chuene told The Times last night he was appalled at "how far people are willing to go to pull down Semenya's victory."

Re: SA Caster Semenya - Declared Hermaphrodite

Just a thought! A contoversial one I know, but today now that it has been established (and a good thing too) that men and women are equal. Why do we still have Mens and Womens seperate sporting events? If we are equal, why don't we compete together? Then we wouldn't have issues such as the above.........

Re: SA Caster Semenya - Declared Hermaphrodite

Purely from a physiological perspective, you cannot argue that she would have an unfair advantage over her fellow athletes due to the presence of high levels of testosterone in her blood. In that sense, and as sad as it is she should not be allowed to compete in the women's class.

I agree with Castro, unless the other women can dope themselves with testosterone, it's unfair.
But now what? Will we see separate Men's, Women's and Hermaphrodite races? Or Hermaphrodite+Sex Changers events? This reminds me of Renee Richards, where does she fit in?

Although it would be a gross intrusion on the young girl, she could always elect to have surgery to remove her internal testes, the source of most of her excess testosterone.

Thing is, it's part of who she is. Should we ban Usain Bolt, arguing he has a physiological advantage over other sprinters?

Edited: confused with another syndrome, soz.

Mush as I hate to agree with the Dude, she is a tad masculine, and when they did her a makeover, she looked just like a bloke in drag. Sorry.

Your logic doesn't quite work - the reason why any athlete A is better than athlete B under equivalent conditions is due to some chemical inbalance.

Amoungst any group of "normal" women there is also a spread in testosterone levels - should this be evened out? What about height - should short high jumpers be allowed to wear stilts?

The question has nothing to do with levels of hormones etc (they are only a side effect), it is only to do with gender and the definition of what is male, what is female and what falls in-between.

Re: SA Caster Semenya - Declared Hermaphrodite

The IAAF has not released any information regarding the test results and have so far not even disussed them with Semenya. All this is pure specualtion until it is made official.

Sky News is reporting that this story came from an anonymous source and, according to officials, the test has not yet been carried out.

Thing is, she probably doesn't have a dick. Her external genitalia are likely feminised and the testes are internalised.
If this source is correct, of course.

Re: SA Caster Semenya - Declared Hermaphrodite

LoL this would come from an Australian news paper...

Granted, allegedly things don’t seem right and the SA athletics governing body have a lot to answer for by allowing the situation to get this far. All those idiots and politicians (Yes politicians were kept separate from the idiots so as not to offend the idiots) shouting their mouths off on TV are going to look pretty silly.

The latest on this story:

The mother of athlete Caster Semenya has spoken of her anguish, after her daughter was forced to undergo a gender test.

She said: 'I can't believe what has happened. This is a real kick in the bollocks for my daughter'.
